Former Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg believes Lewis Hamilton’s landmark victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit could prove to be a defining moment in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship campaign. According to the German, the result has the potential to inject fresh confidence and momentum into Lewis Hamilton’s title challenge as he attempts to close the gap to championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
The Spanish Grand Prix delivered a symbolic and emotional moment for Formula 1 fans. A decade after their intense rivalry as Mercedes teammates reached one of its most controversial chapters at the Barcelona circuit, Nico Rosberg found himself interviewing Lewis Hamilton following the Briton’s first Grand Prix victory in Ferrari colours. The scene highlighted just how much has changed since their championship battles, while also underlining the significance of Lewis Hamilton’s latest achievement.
After enduring a difficult debut season with Ferrari in 2025, Lewis Hamilton has emerged as a genuine championship contender in 2026. Ferrari’s improved competitiveness, combined with the seven-time world champion’s growing confidence in the SF-26, has produced a string of impressive results. Before his victory in Spain, Lewis Hamilton had already secured consecutive runner-up finishes in Monaco and Canada, as well as a podium result in China, demonstrating that Ferrari’s upward trajectory has been building for several races.
Speaking after the race, Nico Rosberg explained that he was genuinely pleased to see Lewis Hamilton enjoying success again after the challenges he faced during his first year at Maranello. The 2016 Formula 1 world champion noted that watching Lewis Hamilton struggle to adapt to Ferrari had been difficult, but he now sees a completely different driver—one who appears relaxed, confident and capable of performing at his very best. Nico Rosberg described the Barcelona triumph as both historic and highly significant, not only for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari but also for Formula 1 as a whole.
The former Mercedes driver also highlighted what he described as a powerful positive cycle that often develops when a driver begins delivering strong results consistently. Nico Rosberg suggested that success naturally increases motivation, confidence and commitment, creating an environment in which both the driver and the team can continue improving. He believes Ferrari is currently benefiting from exactly that dynamic, with the Italian team carrying considerable momentum as the championship enters a crucial phase.
From a championship perspective, the timing of the victory could hardly have been better. Lewis Hamilton capitalised on a disappointing afternoon for championship leader Kimi Antonelli, whose race ended prematurely because of an electrical problem. The Ferrari driver significantly reduced the points deficit and strengthened his position in the title standings.
Following the Spanish Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton occupies second place in the Drivers’ Championship and trails Kimi Antonelli by 41 points. Meanwhile, Mercedes driver George Russell remains third in the standings, sitting nine points behind Lewis Hamilton after finishing behind the Ferrari driver in Barcelona.
With Ferrari’s recent upgrades appearing to deliver the expected gains and Lewis Hamilton rediscovering the form that made him one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, many within the paddock now view the championship fight as far from settled. If the momentum generated by the Barcelona victory continues through the upcoming races, Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari could become an increasingly serious threat to Kimi Antonelli’s hopes of securing the 2026 Formula 1 world title.
