During Nico Rosberg’s ten-year Formula 1 career, the son of the 1982 world champion had the opportunity to drive for two teams: Williams from 2006 to 2009 and Mercedes from 2010 to 2016, the year in which the German won his only world title before surprisingly announcing his retirement from racing. However, during his time in the top tier, Nico Rosberg came very close to adding another chapter to his journey in the Circus, this time by transferring to Italy, specifically to Maranello.
The Admission
The 38-year-old revealed this himself to Sky Sports, taking a trip back in time to revisit the years of his intense internal rivalry with Lewis Hamilton at Brackley, filled with tension and constant battles. The alternative to escape this situation would have been Ferrari, with which Rosberg was on the verge of an agreement: “There were moments when I had the opportunity to sign with Ferrari,” he admitted. “I visited Maranello a couple of times because we had to consider options outside of Mercedes, but I was happy with the choice to stay at Mercedes. It turned out to be the right decision.”
The Dream
Like other drivers in the past, some of whom were world champions with other teams, Rosberg came close to making the move to Ferrari, the most historic and successful team in Formula 1 history. However, despite his victories with Mercedes, the dream of one day wearing red still lingers for the German: “In the next life, I want to race with Ferrari,” he commented with a jest, “but it’s a double-edged sword because if you’re at Ferrari and things don’t go well, they crucify you. Their seat is the one with the most pressure.”
