Nico Rosberg needs no introduction as the 2016 world champion and the only teammate to beat Lewis Hamilton in a Formula 1 championship. His Mercedes journey began in 2010 when the German brand returned to the top motorsport tier. However, it was only from 2013 that Nico Rosberg found himself battling with the seven-time world champion, spending four seasons alongside him before retiring. These years allowed Nico Rosberg to understand Lewis Hamilton and his choice to join Scuderia Ferrari from 2025.
“It took me by surprise. But if you look at the bigger picture: There are two legendary teams everyone wants to drive for: Ferrari and Mercedes. I can understand that he is fulfilling a personal dream,” Nico Rosberg told Süddeutsche Zeitung.
After expressing his surprise at Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, Nico Rosberg reflected on some years of his career, emphasizing that he won’t be returning to Formula 1. In his first three years at Mercedes, Nico Rosberg’s teammate was Michael Schumacher. He explained that returning to Formula 1 at 41, as Michael Schumacher did, doesn’t mean losing driving abilities. Memorable was his pole position, later revoked, in Monaco 2012 aboard the W03.
“I think, if we had the chance to ask him, he wouldn’t regret the comeback. Driving again, the duels that pushed him immensely, plunged him into the fountain of youth.” – the former Formula One driver concluded.
These words highlight Lewis Hamilton’s immense capabilities even at 40, the age at which he will arrive in Maranello.
