Ahead of the season finale, the FIA has issue a third technical directive relating to fuel flow. The latest directive, which will not actually apply in terms of next week’s race, advises that next season teams will be required to run a second sensor.
As reported by leading German automobile magazine ‘Auto motor und sport’, the new sensor rule in 2020 rules out fuel cheating, as the details of the latest FIA directive are now known. In 2020, a second flow rate sensor will be added after the first. This is encrypted so that only the FIA has access to the measurement data.

The second sensor also measures at a different frequency than the first and it is randomly distributed from weekend to weekend. After the race, they are collected by the FIA again. So it is impossible that the sensors themselves are manipulated, completely ruling out cheating.
Currently all cars feature a single sensor in the fuel tank which ensures that the maximum fuel flow rate is restricted to 100kg/h, in accordance to the rule which states that “any device, system or procedure the purpose and/or effect of which is to increase the flow rate or to store and recycle fuel after the measurement point is prohibited”.
