The 2025 edition of the Monaco GP will feature a major new rule: drivers will be required to make at least two pit stops. This decision was made following the events of last year, when a red flag on the first lap allowed all drivers to change tyres, effectively bypassing the obligation to stop during the race.
After that episode, the F1 Commission decided to introduce this new rule to add some unpredictability to a race that can otherwise be quite processional in dry conditions. Below are the rule specifics for cases where a driver fails to comply with the two-stop requirement.
What the regulation says
“For the Monaco race, each driver must use at least three different sets of tyres (either dry or wet). If a driver does not use intermediate or wet tyres during the race, they must use at least two different slick tyre compounds, one of which must be among the mandatory dry specifications (Hard or Medium). Failure to meet these requirements will result in disqualification, unless the race is suspended and cannot be resumed. In that case, thirty seconds will be added to the total race time of any driver who, when required, did not use at least two slick compounds or did not use at least three tyre sets during the race. An additional thirty seconds will be added to the race time of any driver who used only one set of tyres during the race.”
