Ever since Ferrari announced the signing of Lewis Hamilton, one question has remained unanswered: how long will the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion actually stay in Maranello?
Although Ferrari officially confirmed the blockbuster move when Lewis Hamilton agreed to join the Scuderia ahead of the 2025 season, the Italian team has never publicly disclosed the complete terms of the agreement. As has increasingly become the norm across Formula 1, contract details are often kept confidential, with performance clauses, extension options and exit mechanisms rarely becoming public knowledge.
Over the past two seasons, most reports suggested that Lewis Hamilton had committed to Ferrari on a three-year agreement. However, fresh information indicates that the reality may be considerably more interesting than previously believed.
New report points to a contract option through 2028
According to fresh information regarding Formula 1’s evolving driver market, Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari contract reportedly contains an option that could extend his stay through the 2028 season. If activated, the agreement would effectively become a four-year partnership, giving the Maranello team the opportunity to retain one of the sport’s most successful drivers well beyond the initial expectations surrounding his arrival.
The reported clause significantly alters the long-term outlook at the Italian side. It would mean that Lewis Hamilton could still be racing in Formula 1 at the age of 43, while continuing to partner Charles Leclerc as the Scuderia pursues another World Championship.
The revelation also fits within a broader picture emerging across the Formula 1 grid. Max Verstappen is expected to remain tied to Red Bull for several more seasons, Charles Leclerc‘s latest Ferrari extension reportedly secures his future well into the next decade, while Mercedes and McLaren are also positioning themselves for the next major driver market cycle.
Lewis Hamilton’s confidence suddenly makes more sense
The existence of a contract option also helps explain the confidence Lewis Hamilton displayed when questions about his future arose earlier this season.
Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton dismissed speculation surrounding retirement, indicating that he expected to remain in Formula 1 for the foreseeable future. The Ferrari driver suggested that retirement was not part of his thinking and revealed that he was already planning several years ahead, making it clear that he intended to remain on the grid for quite some time.
At the time, many interpreted those comments simply as the confidence of an experienced champion. However, if the reported extension option is accurate, Lewis Hamilton’s remarks appear to have been supported by a contractual pathway that could keep him in Ferrari colours until the end of the 2028 campaign.
Ferrari’s long-term investment is beginning to look justified
When Ferrari decided to recruit Lewis Hamilton, some observers questioned whether committing multiple seasons to a driver approaching his forties represented an unnecessary gamble. While few doubted his achievements, there were understandable concerns about whether he could continue performing at the highest level deep into his Formula 1 career.
Those doubts have gradually faded during the 2026 season.
Under Formula 1’s latest technical regulations, Lewis Hamilton has rediscovered the consistency and confidence that made him one of the sport’s dominant figures for more than a decade. His performances have demonstrated that experience remains a major competitive advantage, particularly as Ferrari continues refining the SF-26.
Alongside Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton has become a central figure in Ferrari’s long-term project. Rather than representing a short-term commercial signing, the Briton increasingly appears to be an integral part of the Scuderia’s technical development and championship ambitions over the coming seasons.
What does it mean for Ferrari’s future?
If Lewis Hamilton ultimately remains at the Maranello team through 2028, the implications extend beyond the current driver pairing. Such a scenario would inevitably delay opportunities for younger Ferrari Academy drivers who have long been viewed as potential future race seats.
Among those most affected could be Oliver Bearman. The British youngster has frequently been identified as a leading candidate for a future Ferrari drive thanks to his close relationship with the Scuderia and his impressive performances since reaching Formula 1.
For now, however, Ferrari appears focused on maximizing one of the strongest driver line-ups on the grid. With Charles Leclerc committed for the long term and Lewis Hamilton potentially holding the option to continue through 2028, the Scuderia could enjoy an unusual period of stability as it continues its pursuit of both Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championship success.
