Charles Leclerc’s difficult run of form alongside Lewis Hamilton has become one of the biggest talking points of Ferrari’s 2026 Formula 1 campaign, with former Grand Prix winner Ralf Schumacher suggesting the Monegasque may need to look beyond technical solutions to rediscover his best performances.
While Ferrari continues to develop the SF-26 throughout the season, Lewis Hamilton has increasingly appeared to extract more consistent pace from the car. That trend has inevitably shifted attention toward Charles Leclerc’s struggles, particularly after several weekends in which the seven-time World Champion has looked more comfortable with Ferrari’s current package.
Although Charles Leclerc managed to outqualify Lewis Hamilton for the first time since the Miami Grand Prix during qualifying in Austria, the race itself told a very different story. Lewis Hamilton delivered a much stronger Sunday performance and crossed the finish line three positions ahead of his Ferrari teammate, underlining the growing gap in race execution between the two drivers.
After the Austrian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc openly admitted that neither he nor the Maranello team’s engineers fully understood why his performances had become so inconsistent. In an effort to regain confidence, the Monegasque even returned to a setup philosophy similar to the one that had worked successfully at the same circuit a year earlier, but the changes failed to produce the desired improvement.
Ralf Schumacher believes Charles Leclerc must adapt to Formula 1’s new reality
Speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Ralf Schumacher argued that Charles Leclerc’s current difficulties are rooted not only in Ferrari’s car but also in the way the latest Formula 1 regulations suit his natural driving style.
According to the former Formula 1 driver, the characteristics of the current regulations appear to work against Charles Leclerc’s strengths, meaning the Ferrari driver now faces the challenge of adapting rather than expecting the car to suit his preferred approach.
Ralf Schumacher suggested that Charles Leclerc has a tendency to compensate for performance limitations by pushing beyond the car’s natural capabilities. In his view, that approach often results in unnecessary mistakes instead of allowing the driver to maximize the package available. Rather than continuously searching for extra performance, Schumacher believes Charles Leclerc must learn to better accept the limitations of the SF-26 while adapting his driving style accordingly.
Lewis Hamilton’s experience could be increasing the pressure
Beyond the technical aspects, Ralf Schumacher also believes there is an important psychological battle unfolding inside Ferrari. The German suggested that Lewis Hamilton’s vast experience has enabled him to place additional pressure on Charles Leclerc, creating a dynamic that extends well beyond pure lap times.
Ralf Schumacher argued that the Briton has developed an exceptional understanding of the mental side of Formula 1 throughout his career, particularly during his famous championship battles with Nico Rosberg at Mercedes. According to the former Formula 1 driver, those experiences have equipped Lewis Hamilton with valuable psychological tools that can influence the balance inside a team as much as outright speed on track.
For that reason, Ralf Schumacher believes Charles Leclerc could benefit from working with a specialist in sports psychology or mental coaching. He suggested that professional guidance might help the Ferrari driver better manage the increasing pressure while maintaining confidence during a challenging period of the season.
Ferrari’s development battle could decide the teammate contest
Despite Lewis Hamilton’s recent advantage, Ralf Schumacher warned against drawing definitive conclusions too early. With the Italian side expected to continue introducing upgrades during the remainder of the 2026 campaign, he believes the evolving characteristics of the SF-26 could still influence the balance between the two teammates.
Even so, Schumacher acknowledged that the seven-time world champion is currently operating at an exceptionally high level. In his assessment, the Briton is extracting more from the Ferrari package than anyone else and is effectively making the SF-26 appear more competitive through consistent execution across both qualifying and race conditions.
Schumacher also expressed satisfaction at seeing Lewis Hamilton return to such a high level after what he described as an extremely difficult final season before joining Ferrari. From his perspective, the contrast between those struggles and Lewis Hamilton’s current form could hardly be greater, with the seven-time World Champion once again demonstrating why he remains one of Formula 1’s most formidable competitors.
