As reported earlier today by Motorsport Italy, Scuderia Ferrari will continue to bring aerodynamic updates for the next Grand Prix, which means the Maranello team should have more downforce in Spain, where Ferrari will debut a new front wing and rear wing. The goal is to increase the aerodynamic load in order to find a good balance that allows the SF90 to transfer the necessary energy to the tyres and allow to car to hit the ideal tyre window, which has been a major problem for the Italian side in the opening rounds of the 2019 Formula One season.
If the rear wing seen in Azerbaijan represented an adaptation of the aerodynamics to the characteristics of the track with a lower configuration to favour the maximum speeds on the long straight of 2.2 km, at Montmelò we will find solutions that will aim at an increase of the downforce without penalizing too much the efficiency, with an incidence of the flaps that could cost in terms of resistance to advancement.
The team from Maranello, therefore, is looking for a solution to its problems: especially with the Soft compound tyres, the SF90 struggles to have a constant behaviour and a competitive pace, while it defends itself better with the Medium tyres, reversing the indications of the most recent past.
The action of the new front wing will also be combined with the greater flow of air that will be blown from the slot in the front rim: the intention is to move away from the wheel the swirls that will come from the new flaps so that they can be useful to clean the wake of the rubber in front of the harmful turbulence.
However, Ferrari was also planning to debut Power Unit 2 in Barcelona but according to Motorsport Italy the Maranello team will likely postpone the introduction of the new power unit in Spain, preferring to continue the bench endurance tests.
“It’s true that Mercedes are quite a few points ahead, but we’ve only just had the 4th race. I still believe in the championship, so does the whole team and now we are only at the 5th race! The SF90 has great potential.” – Charles Leclerc is quoted as saying.
