Monza plans Silverstone-style transformation as Formula 1 pushes for modern facilities
The future of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza is set to involve far more than routine maintenance or cosmetic improvements. One of Formula 1’s most historic venues is preparing for an ambitious modernization programme designed to ensure it remains a permanent fixture on the Formula 1 calendar as the championship continues to expand across the globe.
Mario Isola, recently appointed as General Director of ACI Sport, offered fresh insight into the long-term vision for Monza while attending the presentation of the Confartigianato Motori Award, where F1inGenerale was among the accredited media outlets.
Although extensive work has already been completed in recent seasons—including a resurfaced circuit, renovated underpasses and several infrastructure improvements—Isola made it clear that those projects represent only the beginning of a much broader redevelopment strategy.
According to the ACI Sport chief, Monza has now fully embraced the need to evolve if it wants to remain competitive in modern Formula 1, where commercial value, hospitality standards and state-of-the-art facilities have become just as important as sporting tradition.
Formula 1 history alone is no longer enough
For decades, Monza has been regarded as one of the spiritual homes of Formula 1. The Italian Grand Prix has become synonymous with passionate Ferrari supporters, spectacular high-speed racing and some of the championship’s most memorable moments.
However, the landscape of Formula 1 has changed dramatically in recent years.
With the sport continuing to grow worldwide, new countries are investing hundreds of millions into modern racing venues capable of delivering premium experiences for teams, sponsors, media and fans alike. As a result, even legendary circuits can no longer assume their place on the calendar is guaranteed.
Mario Isola explained that Monza had once been viewed as indispensable to Formula 1, but acknowledged that the sport has demonstrated no circuit is immune from change. He indicated that the arrival of new host nations, backed by significant financial investment and major commercial agreements, has shown that every venue must continue improving if it wishes to remain part of an increasingly competitive Formula 1 World Championship.
His comments underline an important reality facing many traditional European circuits. While heritage remains an enormous asset, Formula 1 today also demands world-class infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly sophisticated team operations and delivering a premium experience for every stakeholder involved in a Grand Prix weekend.
A long-term redevelopment plan is already underway
Isola revealed that Monza is following a carefully structured long-term redevelopment strategy, with several phases already completed and additional projects scheduled over the coming years.
Although he stopped short of revealing specific architectural details, he made it clear that one particularly significant project is progressing behind the scenes. The ACI Sport director described the proposal as an extremely exciting development but suggested it was still too early to disclose further information publicly. Importantly, the next phase of work will not involve further modifications to the racing circuit itself.
The layout has already benefited from major investment, including the new asphalt and improvements to surrounding access routes. Instead, the focus will shift almost entirely towards modernizing the circuit’s permanent facilities.
According to Isola, Formula 1’s priorities have evolved beyond the track surface alone. The championship increasingly evaluates venues based on the overall quality of their infrastructure, including paddock facilities, garages, hospitality areas, media centres and operational spaces used throughout race weekends.
Silverstone provides the blueprint
To illustrate the type of transformation being considered, Mario Isola pointed to Silverstone as one of the best examples of how a historic Formula 1 circuit can successfully reinvent itself without sacrificing its identity.
The British Grand Prix venue has undergone one of the most impressive modernizations of any circuit on the Formula 1 calendar, highlighted by the construction of the iconic Silverstone Wing. The complex completely transformed the venue by introducing modern garages, an advanced paddock, improved hospitality facilities and dedicated operational areas designed specifically around the needs of modern Formula 1.
Reflecting on a recent visit to the British circuit, Isola explained that the contrast between Silverstone’s former facilities and the current complex is remarkable, describing it as an entirely different environment that perfectly reflects the standards Formula 1 now expects from its host venues.
Rather than replacing the circuit’s history, the redevelopment enhanced its ability to compete with newer destinations joining the Formula 1 calendar.
That same philosophy now appears to be guiding Monza’s future.
What the redevelopment could mean for Ferrari and Formula 1
For Ferrari supporters, preserving Monza’s place on the Formula 1 calendar carries enormous emotional significance. The Italian Grand Prix remains one of the most anticipated races of every season, with the famous Tifosi creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in motorsport.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc understand the unique importance of racing at Monza in Ferrari colours, where expectations are immense and every lap is watched by thousands of passionate fans dressed in red.
Ensuring that the circuit continues meeting Formula 1’s increasingly demanding standards will therefore benefit not only the organizers, but also Ferrari, its drivers and the countless supporters who travel to the Temple of Speed each year.
Although the exact details of the redevelopment remain confidential, Mario Isola’s comments leave little doubt about the scale of the ambition. The modernization programme is expected to represent one of the most significant off-track transformations Monza has undertaken in decades, helping secure the circuit’s future in an era where Formula 1 continues expanding into new global markets.
With competition for places on the Formula 1 calendar becoming fiercer every season, Monza appears determined not to rely solely on its extraordinary history. Instead, the legendary Italian venue is preparing to combine its iconic heritage with modern facilities capable of meeting the championship’s ever-rising expectations for many years to come.
