President of the Automobile Club of Milan, Geronimo La Russa, admitted that he hopes the Italian Grand Prix will be able to avoid the recent ban imposed by Formula 1 on pre-race air displays and therefore allow the Frecce Tricolori to perform at Monza ahead of the 2022 Formula One event.
Race promoters for Formula 1 races in 2022 no longer have the possibility of putting on a military aviation display as part of their pre-race build-up after Formula 1 officially announced this decision with the goal of avoiding the potential for geopolitical statements or posturing.
This would mean the end of aerobatic displays such as those performed by the Italian Frecce Tricolori, despite the fact that hope was restored when the British equivalent, the Red Arrows, were given a reprieve for the Silverstone race.

“I hope that the intention to eliminate the performance of the Frecce Tricolori at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix will return and that, in the end, a shared solution will be found so as not to deprive the spectators of what is in effect a show within a show, as well as a strong appeal to national identity,” Geronimo La Russa said, as reported by ANSA – “It is normal that environmental sustainability is also one of the objectives, but I still believe that the Frecce Tricolori parade is a winning element and an added value appreciated by all.” – he added.
Displays featuring civilian aircraft, such as those seen in the Middle East where national airlines complete a flypast ahead of the national anthem, will be allowed to continue but only if sustainable fuels are used in order to abide by Formula 1’s commitment to being carbon neutral by 2030.
