Monaco is just the beginning: Where Ferrari can win in 2026. Why Ferrari could win more than just Monaco.

Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari SF-26, rear view, power unit, engine

As Formula 1 heads to the streets of Monte Carlo, Ferrari finds itself in a position it has been eagerly waiting for since the start of the 2026 season. After months of chasing Mercedes, the Monaco Grand Prix presents what could be the Scuderia’s best opportunity yet to secure a first victory of the year and reignite its championship ambitions.

The unique characteristics of the Monaco circuit have long rewarded mechanical grip, chassis balance, traction and driver confidence rather than outright engine power. Those requirements align perfectly with the strengths Ferrari has demonstrated throughout the opening phase of the campaign.

For both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, Monaco represents more than just another race weekend. It could be a crucial turning point in Ferrari’s season and a chance to prove that the SF-26 has the tools required to challenge Mercedes consistently in the months ahead.

Why Monaco suits the Ferrari SF-26

While Mercedes has established itself as the benchmark under Formula 1’s new regulations, Ferrari has repeatedly shown flashes of exceptional performance in low-speed and technical sections. The SF-26 has earned widespread praise for its chassis efficiency, cornering ability and mechanical grip, often setting the pace in the most demanding sectors of a circuit.

The team’s main limitation has been straight-line performance, an area where Mercedes has enjoyed a noticeable advantage. However, Monaco largely neutralizes that weakness.

With virtually no long straights and overtaking opportunities at a premium, the emphasis shifts toward qualifying pace, confidence over the barriers and the ability to maximize performance through slow and medium-speed corners. These are precisely the conditions where Ferrari has looked strongest all season.

Adding further optimism is the fact that Charles Leclerc has consistently excelled around the streets of his home Principality. The Monegasque driver finally achieved his long-awaited Monaco victory in 2024 and has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to extract extraordinary lap times around one of Formula 1’s most challenging circuits.

Experts see Ferrari as a genuine contender

Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes Ferrari’s strengths could make the team particularly dangerous in Monaco and potentially at several other venues later in the season.

According to Palmer, Ferrari is almost certain to win races in 2026, with Monaco standing out as one of the most likely opportunities. He highlighted Charles Leclerc’s outstanding record around his home circuit and suggested that the Ferrari driver enters the weekend among the leading favorites.

Palmer also pointed to the SF-26’s excellent chassis platform and strong acceleration characteristics. While Ferrari’s power unit still trails Mercedes in outright performance, he believes the nature of the Monaco circuit minimizes that disadvantage and creates an ideal scenario for the Scuderia.

The former Renault driver noted that Ferrari’s strengths are not limited to Monaco alone. He expects the team to remain highly competitive at other technical circuits later in the calendar, including Zandvoort and the Hungaroring, venues where aerodynamic efficiency, chassis performance and driver confidence play a larger role than pure engine power.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton could both benefit

Much of the attention will naturally focus on Charles Leclerc given his remarkable Monaco record and the emotional support of the home crowd. However, Lewis Hamilton could also emerge as a major factor throughout the weekend.

The seven-time world champion arrives in Monaco with growing confidence after securing a strong podium finish in Canada. The British driver appears increasingly comfortable with the SF-26 and has shown clear signs that he is adapting successfully to Ferrari’s environment after a difficult first season in red.

The characteristics of Monaco could also suit Lewis Hamilton’s strengths. Throughout his career, he has excelled on street circuits that reward precision, commitment and race management. If Ferrari can deliver a competitive qualifying package, both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton could find themselves firmly in the fight for victory.

A vital weekend for Ferrari’s championship hopes

Beyond the possibility of ending its victory drought, Monaco could provide Ferrari with something equally valuable: momentum.

The team continues to work on future developments, including anticipated power unit improvements that could help close the gap to Mercedes later in the season. Securing a strong result in Monaco would not only boost confidence within Maranello but also reinforce the belief that Ferrari’s current project is moving in the right direction.

With Charles Leclerc chasing success on home soil, Lewis Hamilton building momentum and the SF-26 arriving at a circuit perfectly suited to its strengths, Ferrari may finally have the opportunity it has been waiting for. If the Scuderia is going to strike back against Mercedes in 2026, Monaco could be the place where the comeback begins.
