Lewis Hamilton – Ferrari: Few chances according to Mika Hakkinen
The eve of the 2023 F1 Monaco Grand Prix, which ended the month of May in Formula 1 without the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola due to the flood that affected the Italian region, was characterized by striking rumors of a possible move of Lewis Hamilton to Scuderia Ferrari in 2024, given the fact that his contract with Mercedes expires at the end of the current Formula 1 season.
Mika Hakkinen expressed his opinion on this scenario, which he believes is highly unlikely:
“Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari would be a surprise to me,” said the two-time world champion with McLaren in the 2023 F1 championship video analysis published by the Unibet YouTube channel, for which Mika Hakkinen is a columnist. “I know that Lewis’ mind is no longer 100% focused on the world of racing, and it’s a completely normal evolution. Can money motivate a driver? Certainly, it can be a stimulus, but there are too many risks involved. I believe it is very difficult for Hamilton to move to Ferrari. When you get older, priorities change. It’s not easy to find the strength to compete against younger opponents, and Lewis is experiencing this dynamic firsthand at Mercedes against George Russell. Formula 1 is suddenly no longer the only thing you wake up and get up in the morning for, so we’ll have to see how long Lewis can find the motivation to continue against younger and highly competitive drivers.” – the former Formula 1 driver pointed out.
Renewal with Mercedes on the way
The Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona revitalized Lewis Hamilton, who finished in second place, clearly faster than his teammate George Russell in qualifying (as was the case on the streets of Monte Carlo in Monaco). Judging from the results of 2023, Lewis Hamilton is indeed finding sufficient motivation to confirm himself as the leader and main driver of a Mercedes team that has already secured George Russell until 2025.

Lewis Hamilton himself has stated that Mercedes will fight with Red Bull in 2024, including himself in the battle. Therefore, the official announcement of the British driver’s renewal with the Brackley team seems to be just around the corner. It will be interesting to see the potential duration of the agreement between Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. Whether it will be a one-year contract, as was the case at the beginning of 2021, or a two-year renewal, like the last contract signed by the seven-time champion a few months after confirming his presence on the grid with Mercedes at the beginning of 2021.
