Mick Schumacher’s uncle hits out at “constant comparisons” with Michael Schumacher. Mick is set to follow in his father’s footsteps next year.

Mick Schumacher is set to follow in his father’s footsteps next year when he takes his place on the Formula 1 grid. The German youngster won the Formula 2 world championship this year after scoring ten podiums in 24 races, with two wins.

His efforts saw him rewarded with a seat in next year’s Formula 1 grid, as he takes over from Romain Grosjean.

The 21-year-old drove in the Ferrari SF90 earlier in the year, and was due to take part in a test for the Alfa Romeo team at the Eiffel Grand Prix, only for the session to be cancelled due to bad weather. His rise through the ranks has seen him earn comparisons with his legendary father, Michael, who won seven Drivers’ Championship titles in his incredible career.

But his uncle, Ralf Schumacher, moved to downplay those comparisons this week as he explained that he wants Mick to be able to go about his career without the weight of expectation on his shoulders.

“These constant comparisons – I just find them boring,” Schumacher said. “It’s Mick who does the job. He will go his own way and that is how he should be judged. What happened 20 years ago has no relevance today.”

Mick Schumacher is set to drive at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the first practice session. Despite having agreed to join Haas next year he will drive for Alfa Romeo in practice for the season finale.

Schumacher’s uncle also discussed Mick’s Formula 2 title success, and alleged that the members of the Prema Powerteam weren’t all on the same page to help the 21-year-old.

“It was difficult for him in the beginning, and then there was a really bad atmosphere against him in the paddock,” he added – “But the answer is that he definitely deserves it.”
