Ferrari Driver Academy member Mick Schumacher admitted that he understands the Maranello team’s call to offer Carlos Sainz a new deal, and confirmed that this news does not change anything for him. As a Ferrari junior, Mick Schumacher is expected to have the opportunity of racing for the Italian side in Formula 1, which would mean emulating his father, Michael Schumacher, who brought the team back on top in the early 2000s and dominated the sport with Ferrari by taking five of his seven Drivers’ World Championships between 2000 and 2004.
For now, this prospect looks to be a fair way off for Mick, given the fact that Ferrari officially confirmed Carlos Sainz will remain with the team until at least the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season, after the Spanish driver impressed during his first F1 campaign with the Maranello team.
Carlos Sainz has not yet managed to score a Formula 1 victory, but he did finish ahead of his team-mate Charles Leclerc in his first season with Ferrari and has secured two podium finishes in the first three races this season.
Therefore, unless something goes very wrong for Carlos Sainz or Charles Leclerc, with the Monegasque driver currently leading the World Championship ahead of the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, Mick Schumacher will have to wait until at least 2025 to hope for a seat with Ferrari. The German driver admitted that he was not surprised by the news that Carlos Sainz would continue with Ferrari for two more years:

“I think it was expected in many ways,” Mick Schumacher said, as reported by Sky Germany. “Of course, Carlos did a mega job last year so he deserves it. For me, it doesn’t mean anything different than usual. I do my job here (at Haas), trying my best, and the opportunities will come.” – the 23-year-old former F2 champion added.
At the same time, Mick Schumacher, who is also the official reserve at Ferrari this year, was asked by Bild newspaper to comment on the heated discussion as a group of rival teams are pushing the FIA to take action against Haas’ ‘white Ferrari’ car for 2022: “If we had copied Ferrari, the FIA would intervene.”
