Ferrari Driver Academy member Mick Schumacher admitted to being relieved after very narrowly escaping a crash with Scuderia Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz as the Spanish driver lost control of his F1-75 car on lap two of the 2022 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne which ended his race.
Mick Schumacher was running close to the Ferrari driver in first laps of the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit until Carlos Sainz went off track going into Turn 10 and hHis F1-75 remained blocked in the gravel, forcing him to retire after just a few laps. Asked about the incident, the Ferrari junior confirmed that he was just happy to avoid getting caught up in Carlos Sainz’s exit, given that the F1-75 car came very close to collecting him: “It was a very eventful [afternoon],” the Haas driver explained – “I think, right from the beginning with Carlos coming around and coming back across the track, I just – I think – got missed by a few metres there.” – he added.
Mick Schumacher admitted that he had to act fast to get himself out of the way of Carlos Sainz’s car as it was going off the track: “I saw him, [and] I thought to myself, ‘That’s a late brake,'” the German commented – “And then I just saw he went off. I wasn’t sure if he was spinning on the grass, but then I saw he was spinning and then I was like, ‘I should probably put some throttle on to get through!’ Then actually, as it came, he cut across. So [I’m] obviously quite happy that we got away with that.” – the Ferrari junior continued.
That incident in the start of the 2022 Australian Grand Prix was not the only close call for Mick Schumacher at the Albert Park track, with a near-miss occurring when he had to swerve to avoid Yuki Tsunoda ahead of him as they drove behind the Safety Car.
