Scuderia Ferrari German driver Sebastian Vettel is sure that Mick Schumacher is deserving of his testing role with the Maranello team, having driven for the Scuderia for the first time in Bahrain this week. Mick Schumacher was second-quickest over the day in Sakhir, with only Max Verstappen managing to go faster.
Mick has followed in his father’s footsteps in 2019, signing to Ferrari’s Driver Academy and making his debut behind the wheel of the SF90. The Schumacher name being connected with Ferrari strongly once again has naturally ignited old passions and has fans excited for a future in F1 for the 20-year-old. Although Sebastian Vettel says there is still a long way to go until Mick proves his worth for the very highest level, he believes he is on the right track, having won European F3 last year and graduating to Formula 2 in 2019.
“Obviously with the name and being the son of Michael there are certainly some links and expectations. But to end up in Formula 1 you need to prove that you have the speed. So far he has done really well. I think the way he has developed in the last years deserves where he is now. Now we should give him the time and peace to do his job, which I think is not easy as it is for him. But on the other hand I think he is used to it, so we will see, but for sure there is a big excitement.” – Sebastian explained.
Mick Schumacher returned to the track for the second day of testing, driving for Alfa Romeo, having impressed in his F2 bow the weekend prior. After finishing eighth in the feature race, and securing reverse-grid pole for the sprint race, Schumacher finished sixth, securing points in both races.
