The family of former Scuderia Ferrari driver and Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher has accused two men, including a former security guard, of attempting to extort $15 million by threatening to release his stolen medical records, as recently reported by the British media.
Michael Schumacher has remained out of the public eye since suffering a severe brain injury in a skiing accident in Switzerland in 2013, after which he was placed in a medically induced coma. He was later moved to the family’s Lake Geneva home, where his wife Corinna, along with a dedicated medical team, has been caring for him in privacy.
The Schumacher family reported the blackmail attempt to Swiss authorities, who coordinated with German officials to arrest Markus F, a former security guard for the family, on July 4 as the primary suspect. Markus F allegedly stole two hard drives containing 1,500 files of Schumacher’s medical data, including photos, videos, medication lists, and his patient file, threatening to release the information on the dark web if the family didn’t pay $15 million.
Authorities also detained Yilmaz T, a bouncer, and his son Daniel L. as co-suspects in the extortion scheme. Markus F reportedly enlisted Yilmaz T’s help to execute the plot in exchange for a small commission. Yilmaz T is accused of contacting the Schumacher family via phone and email to demand the ransom, providing some of the stolen files as proof.
Police were able to track down the suspects using “technical measures,” according to The Sun. Senior public prosecutor Wolf-Tilman Baumert, spokesman for the Wuppertal public prosecutor’s office, stated that the advanced investigation indicated that Daniel L. might have played a minor role as an accomplice.
This extortion attempt follows an incident in May when the Schumacher family was awarded $217,000 in damages from a German magazine that falsely claimed to have an exclusive interview with the former Ferrari and F1 legend. The purported interview turned out to be generated by artificial intelligence.
Eddie Jordan, a former motorsport team owner and family friend, has spoken about the immense pressure on Corinna Schumacher, who he says has lived “like a prisoner” while maintaining the privacy of her husband’s condition. In a 2022 Netflix documentary about Schumacher’s life, Corinna tearfully described their life post-accident, emphasizing their efforts to provide the best care and maintain a sense of family unity.

“Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find. We’re together. We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.” – she explaine.
Corinna emphasized the importance of privacy, a value deeply held by the couple throughout Schumacher’s career and health battle.
