Second podium of the season for Scuderia Ferrari in the 2021 Formula 1 season, and this time at an unexpected track. Charles Leclerc, second at Silverstone, came within two laps of victory, which would have been his third in his career. The Monegasque surrendered to the recovery of Lewis Hamilton, who won despite the ten-second penalty for causing an accident during the first lap with Verstappen at Copse, with the Dutchman crashing into the barriers and causing a red flag.
Charles Leclerc had passed Valtteri Bottas when the traffic lights went out the first time, then thanks to the fight between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton he took the lead and therefore the ‘pole’ for the standing restart. The Ferrari driver drove very well, also coping with power unit ‘cuts’ due to mapping problems. With the help of the pit wall, Charles managed to fix the engine issues, but once the hard tyre was used, his SF21 car was unable to resist Lewis Hamilton’s pace in the final stages of the race.
Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto obviously looks at the glass half full: “Lewis was faster than us. Pf course there is a lot of regret when this happens with two laps from the end, but we have to be realistic. It was a good race for us after the disaster in France. There are already three Grands Prix in a row with good race pace for us, this is the most important thing. We are focused on ourselves, we try to continuously improve. Silverstone is a tough track: we did a good qualifying and got second place in the race. We should be happy. Charles Leclerc was very good all weekend, in qualifying, sprint qualifying and today. Carlos was also good, but more unfortunate. Even today it’s a shame about the pit stop. A gun problem cost him an important position. When he had a clear track he also drove very fast. This is another important thing for us “, the analysis of the Ferrari team principal for Sky Sport F1, at the end of the 2021 Formula 1 British Grand Prix.
