Mercedes aims to widen the gap over Ferrari in the Constructors’ standings at Austin
The Mercedes Formula 1 team approaches the United States Grand Prix in Austin with a clear mission: to strengthen its hold on second place in the Constructors’ Championship and keep Ferrari at bay. As the championship enters its final phase, the Formula 1 circus travels to America, where Mercedes has its sights set firmly on the Scuderia from Maranello. Team Principal Toto Wolff previewed the challenges awaiting them this weekend.
The recent victory by George Russell on the demanding streets of Singapore confirmed Mercedes’ strong form. Combined with a solid showing in Baku, it suggests that the team has successfully addressed several of the weaknesses that emerged during the mid-season phase. According to Mercedes’ official preview, the team’s focus in Austin is clear: to secure P2 in the championship ahead of Ferrari as the season approaches its conclusion.
The challenges of the Circuit of the Americas
With Formula 1 heading to Austin, Mercedes faces the task of confirming its recent performance gains on a very different type of circuit. Toto Wolff explained the uncertainties of the upcoming event: “We’re curious to see if we can maintain the performance we achieved with the W16 in the next series of races across the Americas. These tracks present very different challenges compared to the two street circuits, so we’re heading into a bit of the unknown — but that unpredictability is what makes our sport so enjoyable.”
The track layout and expected temperatures could play a decisive role in the final outcome. Austin’s unique combination of fast corners and technical sections, combined with enthusiastic fans, sets the stage for a thrilling weekend. “Austin has become an iconic stop on the Formula 1 calendar, with a huge and passionate crowd and a fantastic city that hosts it,” Wolff continued. “The Circuit of the Americas, with its elevation changes, spectacular first corner, and mix of high-speed curves and slower traction zones, is a real test. Adding to the challenge, we have the fourth Sprint weekend of the year. That creates extra risks but also more opportunities if we can quickly get the W16 into the right window.”
Mercedes focused on the battle with Ferrari
Mercedes made its goal clear in the team’s pre-race statement: “Looking ahead to Austin, the team will aim to further strengthen its position in P2 in the Constructors’ Championship, with a 27-point advantage over Ferrari in P3 and six races remaining,” read the official document released days before track action begins. The fight between Mercedes and Ferrari is now expected to intensify as both teams seek to end the season as the second-best outfit behind Red Bull.
Strong recent performances boost Mercedes’ confidence
Mercedes has shown encouraging performance even on tracks with higher temperatures, such as Singapore. The introduction of a new front wing appears to have given the W16 an additional edge, though its full potential is still being evaluated. “We’re coming off a great result in Singapore, with George’s victory and Kimi’s fifth place,” Wolff explained, referring to the team’s latest success.
“Not only was that result unexpected, but our performance level between Saturday and Sunday showed it was no fluke. That has been the story of the season to some extent — it’s not clear which team will be ahead from one weekend to the next. We also performed well in Azerbaijan,” the Mercedes boss concluded as he previewed the Texas Grand Prix.
