Rumors gathered by F1-News.eu ahead of the trip to Australia reveal a potentially dominant W17, held back only by the new limits on the compression ratio.
Just days before the green light in Melbourne, whispers from within the Mercedes environment point to significant superiority. According to exclusive information collected by F1-News.eu through conversations with a group of engineers before their departure for Australia, the new Silver Arrow could have an estimated advantage of around 30 seconds over an entire Grand Prix.
A margin of this magnitude would allow George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli to manage the race comfortably. However, harnessing this advantage is closely linked to the Federation’s new regulatory measures.
The technical challenge: managing the 16:0 compression ratio
Despite the raw power of the Brixworth-built Power Unit, engineers believe that Mercedes will not be able to unleash its full potential immediately. The reason lies in the recent official changes approved by the FIA to Articles C5.1.18 and C5.4.3 of the technical regulations.
The need to start working with the new reference values for compression ratio measurements — which will become stricter from June 1st during hot testing — forces Mercedes to carefully manage their engines starting in Australia. The new checks were passed without any issues, but at Brackley, they are convinced that pushing performance too hard now could become “dangerous” in terms of reliability, and it could also allow rival teams to study the Silver Arrows’ data to work on “new parameters” and improve their own performance.
Melbourne: why we won’t see Mercedes’ “true” potential
The season opener on March 8 in Melbourne will therefore see a “keep calm” version of Mercedes. The goal is to gather new data, push the car, but not fully reveal everything in order to avoid being copied.
While Scuderia Ferrari HP relies entirely on the lightning acceleration of the SF-26, and Laurent Mekies’ Red Bull team seeks to minimize damage, often labeled as the third force, Mercedes is playing a long-term strategic game, carefully managing performance to dominate later in the season.
