Speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s long-term Formula 1 future continues to gather momentum, and this time the conversation has taken an unusually personal turn. A former Formula 1 driver has openly admitted to directly encouraging the reigning world champion to consider a future move to Ferrari, adding fresh intrigue ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.
While recent discussion around Max Verstappen’s future has often focused on frustration with Formula 1’s evolving direction and repeated questions about how long he intends to remain in the sport, the atmosphere around the Dutch driver appeared noticeably lighter after the Canadian Grand Prix. Relaxed body language, visible smiles, and a less tense public demeanor naturally led some observers to cool talk of an immediate Formula 1 exit.
However, that has done little to slow transfer speculation.
Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers has revealed that he personally reached out to Max Verstappen to discuss his future career plans, making it clear that retirement is not the path he hopes the Red Bull driver chooses. Instead, Christijan Albers appears to be championing one of the biggest hypothetical moves Formula 1 could imagine: Max Verstappen in Ferrari red.
Christijan Albers wants Max Verstappen to embrace a Ferrari challenge
Speaking in a recent media discussion, Christijan Albers suggested that stepping away from Formula 1 too early would deprive the sport of one of its defining competitors while also limiting the scale of challenges still available to Max Verstappen.
According to Christijan Albers, a driver of Max Verstappen’s calibre should continue pursuing legacy-defining opportunities rather than moving away from top-level single-seater competition. He reportedly indicated that alternative racing categories would not offer the same intensity, competitive relevance, or historical significance at this stage of Max Verstappen’s career.
More notably, Christijan Albers admitted that he intends to revisit the conversation with Max Verstappen in Monaco, where he plans to again encourage the Dutchman to consider a future move away from Red Bull and toward Ferrari when the timing becomes realistic.
The suggestion reportedly centres around the 2028 Formula 1 season, a timeline that would align with broader speculation about major competitive shifts following the next regulatory cycle.
Following the Michael Schumacher path?
For Christijan Albers, the comparison appears obvious. He sees echoes of Michael Schumacher’s career-defining Ferrari chapter in the possibility of Max Verstappen taking on a similar challenge.
The argument is rooted less in nostalgia and more in legacy. Max Verstappen has already established himself among Formula 1’s elite champions, but transforming Ferrari into a championship force would represent a completely different kind of achievement—one that many would regard as historically defining.
Ferrari’s pull remains unique in Formula 1. Across generations, world champions have been drawn by the prestige, emotional symbolism, and sporting mythology attached to the Scuderia. Even when the competitive picture is uncertain, Ferrari continues to represent the ultimate romantic challenge for many drivers.
That context makes the Max Verstappen-to-Ferrari narrative easy to understand, even if there is currently no indication such a move is actively being pursued.
What about Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc?
Of course, any Ferrari future involving Max Verstappen would immediately raise major questions around Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Ferrari’s current high-profile driver pairing.
Lewis Hamilton arrived at Ferrari with the clear objective of chasing further championship glory, while Charles Leclerc remains central to Maranello’s long-term vision. Any scenario involving Max Verstappen would therefore require a major strategic reshaping at the Scuderia.
For now, the idea remains speculative. But in Formula 1, today’s fantasy discussions often become tomorrow’s serious negotiations—and Monaco is never short of dramatic headlines.
