Linking the name Verstappen to that of Michael Schumacher often sparks uncomfortable comparisons and powerful suggestions among Formula 1 fans. Yet these two names were not only connected symbolically, but also quite literally, as in 1994 the seven-time German world champion shared the Benetton garage with Jos Verstappen, the father of today’s four-time Red Bull world champion.
In the year of Michael Schumacher’s first world title, the two drivers competed together at several Grands Prix and managed to build a strong friendship. Despite the very different paths their careers would later take, that bond continued for many years and extended beyond the professional sphere into family life. The two families remained close, spending holidays together with their wives and children in tow.
Max was there too
There is clear photographic evidence of this close relationship, with images published over the years showing Michael Schumacher alongside a very young Max Verstappen. It was precisely these memories, and his relationship with the former Ferrari driver, that Max Verstappen spoke about in a recent interview with Blick, where he expressed deep admiration and affection for Schumacher.
“I have wonderful memories of that period,” said the Dutch driver. “There are so many photos and videos. My father Jos was his team-mate, and our families stayed in touch for many years, to the point that we even spent some holidays together. I used to call him ‘Uncle Michael’.”
Same holidays, same approach
During the interview, Max Verstappen also revealed that he sees himself reflected in Michael Schumacher’s attitude, behaviour and approach to racing. The comparison drawn by ‘Super Max’ with the most successful driver in Formula 1 history goes beyond race weekends, highlighting how he feels a similarity even in private life.
“Michael was a driver who worked tirelessly and always gave everything,” Max Verstappen explained. “For him, only winning mattered, regardless of how it was achieved. Like me, he was always completely focused on track. And at home, he took care of his family, giving them the attention they deserved. I see a parallel between us, both on the track and away from it.”
These words once again underline the depth of the personal connection between Max Verstappen and Michael Schumacher, a bond rooted in shared history, family ties and a racing mentality that continues to resonate across generations in Formula 1.
The connection between Max Verstappen and Michael Schumacher is more than just a historical footnote; it is a blueprint for the “killer instinct” that defines the sport’s greatest champions. By bridging the gap between a childhood spent alongside “Uncle Michael” and his own current reign at the top of Formula 1, Verstappen highlights a lineage of relentless work ethic and familial loyalty. As Max continues to chase the records set by his father’s former teammate, it is clear that the lessons learned during those shared family holidays have become the foundation of his uncompromising approach to racing.
