Max Verstappen open to teaming up with Charles Leclerc despite longstanding rivalry – Italian media. Max Verstappen could join Ferrari alongside Charles Leclerc in 2027.

Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc

Speculation around Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 future continues to grow, with reports suggesting that the reigning world champion could potentially drive for as many as five different teams by 2027. The decision, however, could largely depend on who his teammate might be and whether his current team can maintain a competitive edge.

Although Verstappen has often expressed a desire to finish his career at Red Bull Racing, his long-term commitment hinges on the team’s ability to keep producing a championship-winning car. The Dutch driver has already confirmed his participation with the Milton Keynes outfit for the 2026 season, but sources close to the paddock suggest he is keeping his options open in case Red Bull’s dominance fades under the upcoming 2026 regulation changes.

Among the teams most strongly linked to Verstappen, Mercedes is widely regarded as the leading contender if he decides to move on. Despite the recent contract extensions of George Russell and rising star Kimi Antonelli, the German manufacturer is still believed to be monitoring Verstappen’s situation closely. Team principal Toto Wolff has long admired Verstappen’s talent and may be willing to reorganize the driver lineup should an opportunity arise.

Meanwhile, Ferrari has also emerged as a potential destination. Rumours about contact between Verstappen’s management and the Maranello-based team have intensified, particularly as Ferrari looks to rebuild its title-winning potential. Other credible possibilities include Aston Martin and McLaren, both of which are on an upward trajectory and could tempt Verstappen with competitive packages in the coming years.

Could Max Verstappen join Charles Leclerc at Ferrari?

If Verstappen were to make the bold switch to Ferrari, he would likely share the garage with Charles Leclerc, who has been the team’s cornerstone driver since 2019. The Monegasque star is under contract until the end of 2029, though his deal reportedly includes several exit clauses that could give him flexibility should the team’s performance decline.

With Lewis Hamilton approaching his 41st birthday and entering the final guaranteed year of his Ferrari deal, Charles Leclerc remains the logical long-term option for the Scuderia. According to the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, a Leclerc–Verstappen partnership might not be as unlikely as many think. While the two have shared an intense rivalry stretching back to their karting days, Verstappen has stated on multiple occasions that he would have “no issue” racing alongside the Monegasque driver in the same team.

Insiders report that Verstappen holds a deep respect for Leclerc’s speed and consistency, seeing him as one of the few drivers capable of challenging him on raw pace. Though Charles Leclerc’s personal stance remains unclear, he has shown no hesitation in welcoming strong teammates in the past, as demonstrated when Hamilton joined Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season.

Interestingly, Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar once pointed out that Verstappen tends to leave slightly more space when battling Charles Leclerc on track, suggesting a mutual respect between the two rivals that could form the foundation of a highly productive partnership at Ferrari.

Charles Leclerc’s uncertain Ferrari future and the McLaren connection

Despite his long-term contract, Charles Leclerc’s commitment to Ferrari has been questioned in recent weeks. As the Scuderia continues to struggle for consistency and falls behind the likes of McLaren and Red Bull, the Monegasque driver is reportedly reassessing his future. Some insiders claim that Leclerc has held informal discussions with McLaren, sparking speculation of a potential seat swap with Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, has also hinted that Toto Wolff might be in contact with Charles Leclerc’s representatives, given the Mercedes boss’s long-standing admiration for the eight-time Grand Prix winner. While there is no concrete evidence of ongoing negotiations, the rumour mill suggests that several top teams would be eager to secure Charles Leclerc’s services should he decide to leave Ferrari.

Leclerc accused of playing ‘charades’ with Ferrari

However, not everyone believes that Charles Leclerc truly intends to walk away from Maranello. One respected journalist recently suggested that the 28-year-old could be engaging in what he described as a ‘game of charades’ with Ferrari management. According to this theory, Leclerc’s reported talks with other teams might be a strategic move designed to leverage his value and pressure the Scuderia into reinforcing their commitment to building a championship-calibre car around him.

For now, Ferrari faces a critical crossroads. If Max Verstappen were to join forces with Charles Leclerc, it would create one of the most formidable driver pairings in modern Formula 1. Yet such a move would also bring new internal dynamics — combining two fiercely competitive personalities who have battled each other since childhood.

As Formula 1 approaches a new era in 2026 with significant regulation changes, both Verstappen and Leclerc will be evaluating not just performance but also long-term team stability. Whether they end up as teammates or continue as rivals, their intertwined stories are likely to define the next chapter of the most important motorsport series.
