Toto Wolff had already spoken in defense of Lewis Hamilton, who has been criticized by many for his poor performances with Ferrari this season. The relationship between the two has improved, as confirmed by the Mercedes boss himself, and the latest statements also prove it.
At Monza, the seven-time world champion crossed the finish line in sixth position. After sixteen races, the British driver is still waiting for his first podium of the season with the Prancing Horse. A goal that now seems distant, considering that the year is coming to an end.
Lewis Hamilton even went as far as to doubt himself in Hungary, declaring that Ferrari should change driver. Those words caused a lot of noise, and they also reached Wolff. The Silver Arrows boss commented on the difficult period of his former protégé:
“[Lewis] was wrong to say that. I told him the same afternoon and again the next day,” he revealed to GPBlog. “Have you ever heard Michael Jordan say such things to himself? I am useless and you need to change player? No. So, he speaks with his heart on his sleeve, which is great, it is a fantastic trait of his character, he speaks with emotion. And that also makes him a superstar. He has these emotions and he does not hide them. But this, I feel, was just a bad moment for him and he said it. Because it is simply not true.”
Toto Wolff remains convinced that Hamilton will find a way to overcome this dark period. “It is clear that there is a moment of great frustration,” he continued. “But it has already happened in the past. He just needs another good race weekend, maybe two, and then we will see a very different Lewis Hamilton.”
