Max Verstappen, the Dutch racing driver and Red Bull Racing team member, is currently under investigation following the Hungarian Grand Prix. Starting from the eighth position on the grid, Verstappen ended the race, likely, in ninth place, unable to overtake the Racing Point car driven by Liam Lawson during the final stages. This disappointing weekend for Max Verstappen at the Hungaroring is summed up by this outcome, made even worse by a forced appearance before the race stewards rather than being able to leave the circuit immediately after the race.
During the race, Max Verstappen engaged in a close battle with seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who is driving for the Scuderia Ferrari team this season. Max Verstappen attempted an aggressive overtaking move on the inside line at Turn 5. However, Lewis Hamilton went wide at that corner, apparently without any direct contact between the two drivers. Because of this incident, Max Verstappen was summoned by the race stewards for an investigation to clarify whether any racing rules were broken.
In a statement given just before attending the hearing with the race director, Max Verstappen expressed his frustration with the timing of the stewards’ intervention: “They could have made a decision during the race itself; it is certainly not ideal to have to go to the stewards after the race is over,” explained Verstappen. “I put the nose of my Red Bull car on the inside line, and Lewis Hamilton got scared and went wide all by himself. Am I worried about receiving a penalty? Honestly, I do not care. I finished ninth, and whether I score two points or none makes absolutely no difference at this point.” – the Red Bull man concluded.
