Lewis Hamilton’s weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix may not end on a positive note: the Ferrari driver has been called by the race stewards regarding his on-track incident with Max Verstappen. When it rains, it pours — for Lewis Hamilton, the difficult weekend in Hungary is still ongoing. Awaiting him is the stewards’ decision concerning a collision with Max Verstappen during the race.
The Ferrari driver was attempting a desperate comeback after qualifying in twelfth position but lost several places in the early laps. Outside the top 10, the #44 car still had to make a pit stop when he was rear-ended by Max Verstappen, who was running fresher tires.
The Dutch driver tried to overtake Lewis Hamilton on the inside of the left-hand Turn 4 and narrowly avoided contact, while Lewis Hamilton headed toward the runoff area and ended up behind his rival. The race stewards immediately noted the incident. Subsequently, both drivers were summoned while their cars were still on track.
According to the stewards, Max Verstappen forced Lewis Hamilton off the track. The FIA document states: “Alleged breach of Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2 b) of the International Sporting Code — Car 1 forced car 44 off track at Turn 4 at 15:42.”
The race officials’ decision is awaited. Should a penalty be applied, Max Verstappen would lose his ninth place finish.
Interestingly, this is the second consecutive Hungarian Grand Prix where these two drivers have collided. Last year, the seven-time world champion rear-ended his rival at Turn 1, causing Verstappen’s car to become airborne before going off track and into the gravel.
