Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto is not happy with the fact that Toto Wolff has been trying to interfere with the driver line-up selection at Williams, ahead of the 2022 Formula 1 season.
The Mercedes team boss demanded Alexander Albon break all ties with Red Bull if he wants the chance to get a seat at Williams for next season, but according to the Italian side’s Team Principal, Totot Wolff should have nothing to say about that.
Toto Wolff caused a stir this weekend by openly talking about the seat at Williams. It became more and more clear that Alexander Albon is considered a strong option to replace George Russell who will move to Mercedes in 2022, but Wolff only wants the Thai-British racing driver to break his ties with Red Bull. Mattia Binotto however thinks that the Mercedes boss has nothing to do with in this regard.
“I believe that what happens between a team and a driver is between the team and a driver, and as manufacturers we should have no influence on that. I think it would be wrong. If a driver has been given the chance to drive he should just be given the chance to drive, wherever he is from and if the team would like to give him a seat, then they should give him a seat,” the Ferrari team boss explained, as reported by Crash.net at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
Regarding Ferrari’s juniors such as Mick Schumacher and Antonio Giovinazzi, who have received a seat at Alfa Romeo and Haas as a result of the support from the Maranello team, Mattia Binotto explains: “It’s not about a ‘Ferrari seat’ at Alfa. It was contact from Alfa Romeo, the sponsor of the Sauber team” – he concluded.
