The Formula 1 new sprint qualifying concept returns this weekend at the Italian Grand Prix, and will not have any changes or tweaks as compared to the format which we saw at the Silverstone track a few months ago.
Formula One chiefs Ross Brawn and Stefano Domenicali, as well as the majority of teams and drivers, confirmed that the debut of the format in the Birtish Grand Prix was received with positive impressions and was considered a success.
Yet the usefulness of the final practice session, which takes place on Saturday ahead of the sprint race, was questioned. Regardless, the FIA Formula One Race Director, Safety Delegate, Permanent Starter and head of the F1 Technical Department Michael Masi confirmed that the second trial of sprint qualifying scheduled for the Monza weekend will take place with exactly the same routine as the first one:
“There won’t be any changes” – he explained during the Zandvoort weekend – “After the first experience at Silverstone, we had a very fruitful discussion with the participation of the FIA and all the teams and we all agreed that everything will be according to the exact same rules at Monza. After that, we will get together again and think about whether we need to make any changes for the third one” – Michael Masi explained.
At the same time Formula 1 has officially confirmed that the third and final sprint qualifying test is scheduled for the 2021 Brazil Grand Prix, later this year.
