The recent comments of Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto caused a lot of discussion among Ferrari fans and the media. In an interview with the BBC, the Ferrari boss stated that the Scuderia’s goal at the beginning of the year was to return to being competitive, and that winning was another matter. Hence the misunderstanding: “Ferrari does not want to win, Ferrari will never be world champion again”, and so on, this was the message understood by many who hit back at the Ferrari Team Principal. Mattia Binotto wanted to clarify his comments and the message he wanted to express:
“There is no doubt that today, looking at the standings after seven races, the ambition of every single person in the team is high. And we always want to win, no one on the team holds back, but objectives must be distinguished from ambitions. We are not satisfied even with winning just one World championship, we want both if we look at ambition. And so next year, and the next,”he said, in a recent interview for Sky Sport F1 ahead of the qualifying session in Baku.
“Then, however, we have to distinguish between objectives and ambitions. We have come from difficult years and have set our sights on being competitive again. This means being in the first race and that’s it. But it means at the top all season, continuing to develop, doing well and being able to win in every race. Then we will sum up. But we must remember what the goal we set ourselves last year was, and no one would have bet on our ability to be competitive at the start of this season.” – Mattia Binotto added.
Even the last few races have shown that sometimes there can be a difference between goal and ambition. With a car that has taken pole position in many races this year, we have not always won. Red Bull won five and we won only two races, perhaps it should have been the other way around. What happened in Monaco happened, but also because of such a race I would like to emphasize that if we made certain decisions that did not make us win, it is because at that moment we were aiming for a one-two finish and not a simple victory. If a team wants to score a one-two, this once again shows ambition. And for those decisions taken together I’m happy that they were aimed at scoring a 1-2.” – the Ferrari Team Principal concluded.
