Monza situation, Matteo Salvini takes action
On April 5th, Matteo Salvini, Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Infrastructure, met with Flavio Briatore and, via video call, the President of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, to discuss the future of the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza circuit. The historic Italian event is in fact linked to the Formula 1 with a contract expiring at the end of 2025 and to confirm its presence in the world championship calendar it needs important funding that would guarantee it can remain at the level required by the championship organizers.
On the sidelines of an election rally in Seregno on Tuesday, April 25th, Matteo Salvini announced a meeting at the MIT for today, precisely to discuss about the future of Monza: “Tomorrow I will have a meeting in Rome at the ministry, with the governor of Lombardy present, because the Monza Grand Prix is at risk. And as minister, I will do everything so that Monza keeps its Grand Prix, which means history, tradition and work.”
Sticchi Damiani also concerned
Recently, the president of ACI, Angelo Sticchi Damiani, had warned of the difficulties facing the racetrack: “We have a big challenge ahead of us, which is to go beyond 2025. I believe that Aci has made a crazy effort, but our budget is beginning to have difficulties. Italy cannot do without its Grand Prix in Monza, but we have reached the limit.” The request of the Italian manager is very specific and is related to help with funding: “What we have to demonstrate to Stefano Domenicali and Formula 1 is that we are proceeding in a serious and concrete manner. We have done what we had to do, now the rest is all done through procedures.”
Stefano Domenicali’s response
Also yesterday, the President of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, in a long interview with the newspaper Il Giorno, spoke about Monza, explaining that the venue needs a high-level plan: “2024 must be a date on which there are no more excuses for not doing things. The F1 calendar is a world of competition and it is essential that there are projects which are up to the task, at a time when supply is greater than demand. I am waiting to see the proposals that will be presented in the coming months.”
