Matteo Bobbi and Ivan Capelli on Leclerc’s magical move against Russell: “This is F1!”
During the Sky Race Anatomy broadcast following the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, Matteo Bobbi and Ivan Capelli shared their thoughts on Charles Leclerc’s stunning overtake on George Russell at Turn 12.
A move that sparked debate
The overtake raised several questions after the race, as the stewards ultimately deemed the action legal despite acknowledging that the Ferrari driver had exceeded track limits, placing all four wheels beyond the white line.
Insights from Matteo Bobbi and Ivan Capelli
Before the FIA stewards’ official decision was announced, Matteo Bobbi commented: “I would be negatively surprised if there was a penalty. That overtake should be shown by teams to their drivers—on one hand as an example of how to execute it, and on the other, how not to let it happen. In my opinion, Russell really slept on that one.”
He continued: “I choose that overtake as the best of the race. I found it beautifully constructed because Leclerc was incredibly clever, like a cat, knowing the exact moment to attack his opponent. George Russell didn’t expect it and left the door slightly open. This is the F1 we ask for and want, with genuine battles and overtakes. This is Formula 1.”
Ivan Capelli also weighed in, stating: “I think it was a bold, aggressive overtake, one of those that truly push the limits.”
