After a troubled start to the Formula 1 season for Ferrari, Martin Brundle warned the team against making hasty decisions, as often happens in football when the coach is sacked. The Scuderia is only fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, with a single podium finish from Charles Leclerc in Saudi Arabia.
Despite signing Lewis Hamilton and high expectations, Ferrari is struggling to be competitive. Lewis Hamilton won the Sprint Race in China, but the team has fallen behind McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes, and even Williams. The SF-25 doesn’t appear to be capable of fighting for the title as expected.
Should the situation change?
During the Miami Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc finished seventh and Lewis Hamilton eighth, with internal tensions caused by poorly timed team orders. Martin Brundle stressed that changing management is not the solution, as frequently seen in other sports: the team must instead fully understand its technical limitations.
“Obviously Ferrari is not happy, they expected to fight for the championship, especially with a line-up like Leclerc and Hamilton,” Martin Brundle said on the Sky Sports F1 podcast. “What they must not do is act like a football team.
“They shouldn’t sack the manager and the whole team to improve the situation — it wouldn’t change anything, and we’ve seen how some teams have made that mistake…” the British commentator continued – “They need to understand that being the fifth-fastest team on the grid is a big issue,” the former driver emphasized. “Clearly, if they could improve the car, they would — as we saw last year, when Ferrari knew they had a problem and it took several races before progress was visible, considering the races to come and the cost cap to manage. There will definitely be a lot to discuss at Ferrari; one Williams was fifth and the other right on their tail, and Carlos Sainz was very unlucky with the virtual safety car, otherwise he could have passed them both.” – the Sky Sports F1 pundit concluded.
