A former Formula 1 driver has issued a clear warning regarding Charles Leclerc’s season, pointing to Lewis Hamilton’s recent form and raising concerns about what could happen if the current trend continues.
Charles Leclerc’s difficult spell is rapidly becoming a major talking point. A second consecutive retirement has left the Monegasque driver 40 points behind his Ferrari teammate, while on the other side of the garage Lewis Hamilton is enjoying a wave of momentum following his first victory for the Scuderia. As a result, questions are beginning to emerge about the balance of power within Ferrari and how the rest of the season could unfold.
The transformation within Ferrari now appears complete. Lewis Hamilton’s victory in Barcelona delivered a significant shift in the internal dynamics of the team, showcasing a driver fully in tune with both the SF-26 and the current direction of the Scuderia.
The British driver built his success through strong race pace, composure under pressure and excellent tyre management. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc endured another frustrating afternoon, with a technical problem ending his race just a few laps from the finish.
The contrast did not go unnoticed by Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle, who offered a blunt assessment of the situation. According to the former Formula 1 driver, the internal changing of the guard has already happened: Lewis Hamilton has become Ferrari’s reference point, while Charles Leclerc must respond quickly to avoid slipping into a role neither he nor the team would want to see him occupy.
Martin Brundle: “Charles must bounce back immediately”
“Charles has been going through a terrible period recently and he needs a very strong performance in the next races in Austria and Silverstone to re-establish himself, because Hamilton now looks like the clear leader of the team. Lewis’ last three results read second, second, first.
“Would he have won regardless of saving 10 seconds during that third and final pit stop? My feeling is that he would have won anyway, such was his pace and tyre advantage during the closing stages.”
The picture emerging from Ferrari is becoming increasingly clear. Lewis Hamilton is currently enjoying one of his strongest periods since joining the team, while the Moneagsque has fallen into a negative spiral that could have significant consequences for his championship campaign.
This is not a question of talent. Charles Leclerc’s speed and ability have never been in doubt. Instead, it is a matter of confidence, consistency and the ability to react when circumstances seem to be working against you.
The next two Grands Prix will be crucial, not only for the championship standings but also for Ferrari’s internal balance. If Charles Leclerc can recover and return to form, the battle between the two Ferrari drivers could become a major strength for the team.
If the current trend continues, however, the narrative being pushed by many British observers could begin to look increasingly accurate: Lewis Hamilton leading the way, with Charles Leclerc forced into the role of chaser.
