While the departure of Mattia Binotto as Ferrari team principal was already official, and the fact that Frederic Vasseur would replace him at the top of Ferrari’s Formula 1 Racing Division was also known, Formula 1’s off-season still went into an unexpected overdrive with no less than four major team boss announcements on Tuesday:
Alfa Romeo boss Fred Vasseur was confirmed to Scuderia Ferrari, while McLaren’s Andreas Seidl handed in his resignation to be part of Audi’s future project. The German motorsport engineer therefore moves to Sauber-run Alfa as its new CEO ahead of Audi’s arrival and he will be replaced at McLaren by former Ferrari Race Engineer Andrea Stella. All of this happened just one day after Williams revealed the shock news that both its team principal and technical director would leave the team ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 season.
In an article for “The Race, F1 expert and technical editor Mark Hughes shared his thoughts on what this could mean for the Italian side, pointing out that the French manager will not have an easy task as he attempts to bring Ferrari back on top:
“Fred Vasseur is, I fear, going to face the exact same problems at Ferrari as did his predecessor Mattia Binotto. In fact, maybe even more so given that his title of team principal and general manager suggests less autonomy than Binotto’s team principal and managing director. I hope I’m wrong because Freddy is a good guy and it’s important for Formula 1 that Ferrari is a contender. His problems won’t necessarily be in the short-term as the technical programme should be unaffected and looks likely to be very fruitful. It’s whether he will be able to get to the underlying problems of the team culture – which is determined from above – and that’s a cause for concern.” – Mark Hughes explained.
