“I would very much like to see Vettel win with Ferrari and I know for sure that he really want to be there, in that team. I know it has always been his dream to drive for Ferrari, ever since he was a child, when Michael Schumacher was his real hero” – said Mario Andretti, as reported by the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, while speaking of Sebastian Vettel’s career in the Scuderia Ferrari team.
The 1978 Formula One world champion has been very clear about this situation, especially after rumors increased regarding the possibility of Sebastian Vettel moving to Mercedes from 2018 if Ferrari could not provide a more competitive car for next season. However, Mario Andretti is confident that the German driver has no intention of leaving Ferrari and wants to fight for the Formula One championship with the Maranello side:
“He is just a bit frustrated at times, but that is normal given the situation, because things did not go as he wanted, as Ferrari wanted. Sebastian has a good relationship with Kimi (Raikkonen) and this is also very important for the team. Unfortunately this year things did not go their way: it is normal to see him frustrated when you know that he can always do more, he can do much better but the car is not yet up for the challenge. He belongs there with Ferrari and I think many people like me hope to see him world champion one day in red. I am a fan, I like him a lot and I always follow him. He said that he would one day want to become Formula One champion with Ferrari, and this is what will happen.” – concluded Mario Andretti, who won the 1971 South African Grand Prix driving for the Scuderia Ferrari team, as he finished ahead of Jackie Stewart from Tyrrell-Ford and his Ferrari teammate, Clay Regazzoni.
