According to the President of the Community of Madrid, the idea of a race in the Spanish capital is not impossible. In the world of football, the Spanish Derby is between Real Madrid and Barcelona, two teams that have brought their nation to the top of European and international competitions.
However, in Formula 1, only Barcelona has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix since 1991, with the exception of two races held at the Jerez de la Frontera in 1994 and 1997, but in those cases, they were officially recognized as the European Grand Prix.
The dream of Madrid is to host a Grand Prix and this idea has become more concrete in recent months, especially after the plans made by the Community of Madrid to host a Grand Prix in the capital. This idea has been welcomed by the President and chief executive officer of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, but it has been considered difficult to implement given the fact that it would mean organizing two Grand Prix races in Spain in the same championship. The contract with Barcelona expires in 2026, and Madrid is seriously aiming to replace its rival city in the sport.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, Spanish politician and journalist serving as the president of the Community of Madrid since 2019, strongly believes in this goal. In an interview with Vozpopuli, she expressed her confidence in the project, as well as in another major international sporting event: “I am convinced this can become a reality, but negotiations must be concluded, and we must wait for now – she commented – but of course, I am extremely positive. The Olympic Games are also welcome.”

Isabel Díaz Ayuso explained that the proposed track would be a city circuit that could be assembled and disassembled, and it would not be at Jarama but near Valdebebas and IFEMA (a trade fair center). They would use the best infrastructure that IFEMA already has and combine it with musical events, restaurants, and shops. According to Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the People’s Party of Madrid, “there is currently no Formula 1 circuit in the world like this.”
