Following the launch of the Madrid Grand Prix, Spain could see yet another F1 race in 2027 thanks to a renewal that is reportedly very close to being finalized. The term “Formula America,” linked to the many U.S. rounds on the Formula 1 calendar, could soon be replaced by a new nickname, as the Iberian Peninsula might host up to three Grands Prix by 2027.
In addition to the inaugural Madrid GP, the F1 calendar in two years will welcome back the Portimão weekend. The announcement came in recent days, surprising even seasoned insiders who had long resigned themselves to the idea that the Portuguese circuit might not return.
Spain wants it all
But that’s not all. Despite persistent rumors in recent months about the possible end of the Barcelona Grand Prix, the Catalan event may still have a future in the F1 Circus. According to the Spanish daily MARCA, a contract renewal between Formula 1 and the Montmeló circuit is reportedly close, with an official announcement expected in January.
This would mean that the Iberian Peninsula could host as many as three Grands Prix in 2027, establishing a presence similar to what exists in MotoGP. Naturally, Spanish fans are hoping that this expansion could coincide with Fernando Alonso or Carlos Sainz being in contention for something significant as early as 2026. Both drivers have committed to projects that strongly focus on the upcoming regulation changes and are eager to see whether their strategic choices will pay off.
As contracts finalize and the 2026 cars take shape, the Iberian influence on Formula 1 appears stronger than ever – promising thrilling races and renewed hopes for local stars to shine on home soil in the seasons ahead.
