Lewis Hamilton hails the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix ahead of 2027 Formula 1 comeback
After a challenging 2025 season, Ferrari are heading into the winter with a clear need for a reset. Meanwhile, Formula 1 fans have another reason to look forward to the 2027 calendar: the Portuguese Grand Prix is set to make a comeback, following a newly agreed two-year contract.
Portugal has a rich history in Formula 1, first hosting a Grand Prix in Porto in 1958, before the race moved to Monsanto and then Estoril. Legendary drivers such as Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, and Alain Prost have all claimed podium finishes in the country. Now, with the 2027 and 2028 races confirmed as part of F1’s rotational schedule, the nation is returning to the global stage. Spa-Francorchamps is expected to rotate, with confirmed dates in 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031, while the Dutch Grand Prix will host its final event in 2026, and Catalunya will drop from the calendar next year.
The Algarve International Circuit, also known as Portimao, last hosted Formula 1 in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lewis Hamilton, driving for Mercedes, claimed victories on both occasions, including his historic 92nd career win in 2020, which surpassed Michael Schumacher’s record for the most wins in F1 history. The Briton has since extended his tally to 105 career victories.
Lewis Hamilton praised Portimao as one of his favourite circuits, highlighting the challenging layout and unique elevation changes. He explained that the combination of blind corners, steep ups and downs, and fast bends make it a circuit that is not only thrilling to drive but also offers good overtaking opportunities. He recalled growing up watching the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril, and described returning to Portugal to compete as an incredible experience, noting the enthusiastic new generation of fans he encountered. In comparison to other tracks like Austin, Lewis Hamilton placed Portimao among his top circuits in Formula 1.
With Portimao confirmed for 2027, speculation continues about which other circuits could join the Formula 1 calendar in future rotations. Rumours suggest that the Turkish Grand Prix could return, following a brief comeback during the pandemic. Istanbul Park remains a fan favourite and has historical significance, as Lewis Hamilton secured his seventh world title there in 2020.
Formula 1 is also exploring opportunities to expand audiences and revenue in existing markets. The United States currently hosts three races, and Saudi Arabia could potentially host two events in the future, with plans for an additional street circuit already in motion. While the F1 calendar is likely to evolve significantly in the coming years, Portimao’s return is a welcome addition that drivers, particularly Lewis Hamilton, are enthusiastic about.
