The FIA has released an official communication addressed to all Formula 1 teams and race officials ahead of the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix, scheduled to take place at the Shanghai International Circuit from March 13 to March 15. The notice concerns several operational changes introduced because of logistical issues related to the delivery of tyres.
According to the document signed by race director Rui Marques, the official tyre supplier encountered delays in the arrival of materials intended for the teams. This situation has made it necessary to review part of the operational schedule originally planned for Wednesday.
Chinese GP delays: reduced restricted period for teams
In order to manage the situation as efficiently as possible, the FIA has decided to introduce a temporary exemption from the usual operational regulations that govern race weekends.
The document explains that, only for this particular race, the so-called Restricted Period 1 scheduled for Wednesday will be reduced by six hours. This adjustment will allow teams to have additional time available to complete the necessary preparation work once the tyres have been mounted by the official supplier.
However, this concession will only apply to a limited number of team personnel.
Maximum of six team members allowed
The FIA has established that each Formula 1 team will be allowed to use a maximum of six operational staff members to carry out activities related to tyre preparation.
The authorized personnel will be permitted to work exclusively on the procedures that take place after the tyres have been fitted by the supplier. The objective is to allow the teams to properly prepare their equipment ahead of the first on-track activities of the race weekend, while still respecting the paddock curfew regulations.
A measure valid only for the Shanghai weekend
The FIA also clarified that this modification represents an exceptional concession that will apply exclusively to the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.
The logistical difficulties related to the transport of equipment made this small organizational adjustment necessary in order to prevent further delays to the teams’ preparation activities.
For the moment, the rest of the Shanghai race weekend schedule remains unchanged.
The logistical challenges facing the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix shows the complex global machinery required to run a modern Formula 1 season. By granting this curfew waiver, the FIA has prioritized technical readiness and safety, ensuring that all teams have their tire sets balanced and ready for the high-speed demands of Shanghai. As the paddock settles in, the focus shifts from shipping containers to the asphalt, where the battle for supremacy in the second round of the championship is set to ignite.
