Mercedes’ one-two finish at the Australian Grand Prix marked a return to the top for the Brackley-based team. George Russell secured victory ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli, crossing the finish line with a margin of around fifteen seconds over the Ferrari drivers. It was an important result that, according to Toto Wolff, represents the clearest signal yet that Mercedes has regained its competitive edge after several difficult seasons.
The Mercedes team principal spoke openly about the satisfaction within the team following the Melbourne triumph. “There is a lot of satisfaction in the team at the moment,” Toto Wolff explained.
The Austrian manager also reflected on how the last few years have been more challenging compared to the extraordinary period of dominance that Mercedes enjoyed between 2014 and 2021. “We had an incredible run with eight consecutive titles and then some very difficult years. We still won races and finished second in the championship, but we hadn’t seen a solid one-two result that makes you think you can fight for the title for quite some time.”
Toto Wolff wary of Ferrari: the Mercedes team principal’s words
For Wolff, the main feeling within the team after the Australian Grand Prix is very clear. “The prevailing feeling is that Mercedes is back.” Despite the final result in Melbourne, the Mercedes boss also emphasized that Ferrari showed signs of being a very competitive opponent.
“Before the race many people were saying that we would pull away if you looked at the pace in the long runs, but that wasn’t the case,” he explained.
The Mercedes team principal also recalled the intense battle in the early stages of the race between George Russell and Charles Leclerc. “We knew Ferrari would be very strong at the start and that’s exactly what happened. At the beginning it was a real fight between Charles and George.” For several laps the situation remained extremely balanced.
“At one point there was a three-way battle between the two Ferraris and George, then Kimi also rejoined the fight. For me the feeling is that we will have a battle with Ferrari.”
Toto Wolff also commented on the behavior of the new generation of cars introduced in the 2026 Formula 1 season, highlighting how the vehicles tend to remain very close together when running in traffic. “With these regulations, when you are close to other cars it is very difficult to break away. The performance tends to converge and this makes the races interesting,” he explained.
The situation changes, however, when a car manages to run in clean air. “When you have clean air the pace emerges. Both aspects are part of a great race. Our pace in the final stages was very encouraging, but at the beginning there was practically no difference between Ferrari and Mercedes.”
This balance suggests that the 2026 Formula 1 season could turn into a very closely fought championship battle between two of the sport’s most historic rivals.
This early-season verdict from Toto Wolff highlights a shift in the F1 power dynamic, suggesting that while Mercedes currently holds the upper hand, Ferrari’s SF-26 possesses the raw speed to turn the title race into a multi-team marathon. The technical convergence brought about by the new rules means that strategic execution and driver consistency will be more vital than ever. As the paddock looks toward the next round, the narrow margins seen in Melbourne promise a season where every tenth of a second could decide the ultimate winner of the 2026 World Championship.
