Norris fastest for McLaren on day one
Lando Norris has ended day one with the fastest time for McLaren, ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
18:35
Mick Schumacher returns to track as Haas complete repairs
That damaged floor hasn’t kept the Ferrari junior off track for too long.
Hopefully he can get a clear run until the end now.

Haas having afternoon problems
Haas and Mick Schumacher have struggled to get laps on the board this afternoon, due to a problem with the VF-22.
A line from them: “This afternoon’s running has been disrupted by a damaged floor. The crew are continuing to work hard on repairs so that Mick can add to his laps.”
The youngster has managed only eight laps in total.
18:15
Carlos Sainz up to second place!
Could it be a Scuderia Ferrari one-two finish at the end of this first testing day? It very well may be, as the Spanish driver is now second on the timesheets with a 1:20.416, three tenths down on Charles.
18:05
Here’s Carlos Sainz testing out just how well these all-new cars follow…

18:02
Carlos Sainz goes P2
And just like that, Charles Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz sets a time of 1:20.416, putting him P2 on the timesheets. Not bad!
17:55
Only Alonso running
It is now just Fernando Alonso out on track, with the session heading towards its final hour.
17:41
Carlos following Verstappen
Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has been following Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on the track for a few laps, with both typically lapping in the low 1:23s, but the Spanish driver has also hit the 1:22s.
17:37
Not much running for Mick Schumacher
It has been a pretty quiet day for Haas so far, with Ferrari junior Mick Schumacher only putting in eight laps since the afternoon session began.
Meanwhile his teammate Mazepin set 20 laps during the morning session.
17:27
Two cars out there at the moment
Tsunoda and Verstappen are currently the only two cars out on track.
17:20
Hamilton getting closer to Russell
Lewis Hamilton has put in a new PB: 1:21.032. He’s just under three tenths off his teammate now.
Charles Leclerc’s time is still the fastest of the day so far: 1:20.165.
17:15
Haas struggling for mileage
Not quite going to plan for Haas so far today, it’s fair to say. Nikita Mazepin managed just 20 laps in the opening session – a quarter of what the Ferrari and Red Bull managed – while Mick Schumacher hasn’t even got into double figures in terms of laps since lunch.
The team said they had a cooling leak issue this morning – has that continued this afternoon?
17:02
Alonso now the only car out on track
The rest of the pack have come in to the pits now, leaving Fernando Alonso out to explore the Barcelona track all by himself.
Alpine will be happy with the laps they are putting on the board today.
16:48
Big three go past 100 laps
Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull have all surpassed 100 laps for the day.
With the main aim of the game being to amass data in the early stages of testing, each team will surely be happy with their work so far on day one.
16:30
Carlos Sainz’s 16-lap run in the Ferrari comes to an end.
16:21
Four cars out on track
Carlos Sainz has now put in nine laps on this run on the Hard tyre, with his best time currently a 1:22.134. Meanwhile Ocon is on the sixth lap of a run, also on the Hards, and his fastest lap is a 1:24:456.
Norris and Schumacher are also out on track, with Norris on the Mediums and Schumacher on the Hards.
16:09
Norris back on track
After that earlier stop, Norris has returned to the track, and is currently on the second lap of his run on the Hard compound.
15:58
Trouble for McLaren?
Lando Norris has stopped at the end of the pitlane and his car is being wheeled back to the garage by the McLaren mechanics.
Not ideal after a strong morning for the Brit.
15:53
Good progress for Carlos
Carlos Sainz is making an impact on the standings in his Ferrari.
The Spaniard has climbed to seventh, just a few tenths back from Max Verstappen’s Red Bull.
Carlos Sainz’s team-mate Charles Leclerc remains top of the standings after a strong showing in the morning session.
15:45
Carlos Sainz and Bottas also set times
Carlos Sainz has also set his first times of the day after taking over Ferrari duties from Charles Leclerc.
Valtteri Bottas is getting his first run in the Alfa Romeo and has already bettered the time set by the team’s reserve driver Robert Kubica during the opening session.
Max Verstappen is continuing for Red Bull this afternoon, while Lando Norris is also getting a full day of testing in for McLaren.
15:34
All a bit quiet here: Carlos Sainz is back in, only Hamilton is left out on track.
15:20
Making up for it
Bottas is now out and making up for Alfa Romeo’s lost time this morning
15:15
Max Verstappen heads out
There is finally some action on track, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen heading out. He has been joined by none other than Bottas, so it is seemingly a better start to this session for Alfa Romeo.
15:02
Time for round two!
And we are off for the afternoon session of this first test day. It’s a quiet start, though, with no cars on the track yet. Carlos will drive for Ferrari in this second part of the day.
14:57
14:18
Break time
The teams will now be on a break before the afternoon session begins at 13:00 GMT.
14:00
Morning session comes to a close
And that’s it! The first session of this pre-season test is complete. Charles Leclerc maintained his place at the top of the timesheets with that lap of 1:20.165.
13:58
In the final minutes of this monring session, there are still six cars out on the Spanish track, but it isn’t currently looking like there will be a time to challenge Charles at the top of the timesheets.
13:54
An improvement for Norris
McLaren driver Lando Norris moves up to second in the timings after setting a lap of 1:20.474. The British driver driver remains out on track along with Vettel, Tsunoda, Verstappen and Alonso.
13:48
Latifi and Charles Leclerc are both still out on relatively longer runs, with the Williams having completed 16 laps on the Hard tyre whilst the Ferrari has racked up 15 laps with the Medium, with two short stops in between.
13:44
Robert Kubica has finally set a representative lap time – leapfrogging Mazepin with a 1min 25.909sec
13:25
Sebastian Vettel climbs standings
Sebastian Vettel has just propelled his Aston Martin to 4th.
A change to the C3 tyres has helped him set a 1:21.551, just a few tenths shy of Lando Norris’ McLaren in third.
13:16
Four cars on track at the moment – but Robert Kubica’s Alfa isn’t one of them. Still only a quartet of tentative laps to the Pole’s name.
13:13
Max Verstappen racking up the laps
He may not have the fastest time, but Max Verstappen is providing plenty of data for his Red Bull team.
The 2021 F1 world champion has already completed 65 laps in the opening session, and with the whole afternoon to come, looks on course to do well over 100 circuits of the Barcelona circuit.
13:03
Norris showing speed
Lando Norris, still using the second hardest compound of tyres, makes a significant improvement in the McLaren to move within a few tenths of his good friend George Russell in the Mercedes.
12:47
Charles Leclerc reclaims fastest time
Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has reclaimed the fastest time of the morning after momentarily sending his Ferrari nearly a full second clear at the top of the standings.
12:34
Limited track time for Alfa Romeo
No, it’s not the camouflage that’s hiding the Alfa Romeo, Robert Kubica has just hardly been on track this morning.
Robert Kubica has only set four lap times so far – worrying signs for the Italian team?
12:09
Check out a photo gallery from the morning session, with Charles Leclerc on track

Pirelli’s plan is for wet-weather tyre testing to take place on Friday afternoon, in case it will not rain today or on Thursday, which at this moment seems unlikely. On Friday the circuit will be artificially dampened to allow the teams to run the new Pirelli Intermediate and Wet compounds.
