Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto and his Mercedes counterpart Toto Wolff and Mattia Binotto are not convinced that the new Formula 1 rules and regulations for the 2022 championship will lead to better and much more exciting on-track racing.
The idea behind the huge regulation changes was that the design based on the ground-effect aerodynamics would allow cars to follow each other more closely and therefore give drivers the possibility to attempt overtaking moves more easily. Or in other words, we will only really know properly when the Formula 1 season starts, despite the fact that the two pre-season testing sessions in Barcelona and Bahrain should also provide some useful feedback and indications.
Mattia Binotto and Toto Wolff are retaining a degree of scepticism when asked if what Formula 1 hopes to see materialise will actually happen this way: “I am optimistic the new rules will improve racing. But the truth is I have no idea,” said Toto Wolff, as reported by Motorsport-total.com – “The aerodynamic concept of the cars is fundamentally different from anything we have known before. Only when we actually race against each other will we see whether it has become easier or not. I think anyone who predicts overtaking will get easier is making a bold statement.” – he added.

Mattia Binotto also shared his thoughts on the subject and seemed to agreed with his old rival that we have to wait before stating that Formula 1 fans will be treated to more in the way of entertaining action starting with the next championship:
“We have to wait and see. It’s very difficult to gauge from the simulations. The cars generate plenty of downforce and performance. So I don’t expect too many changes from last year. But I could also be completely wrong. Again, only the track will show whether there has been an improvement or not. Let’s wait a few days for this week [unofficial testing in Barcelona] and Bahrain. Then we will surely be able to give a better answer.” – the Ferrari boss explained.
Scuderia Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz confirmed the drivers will also focused on evaluating the ease of overtaking this week in Barcelona and again at the Bahrain International Circuit next month:
“In my opinion, we should invest a little time to check this,” said Carlos, who joins teammate Charles Leclerc for a second year with the Scuderia in the new F1-75 – “That’s a topic we will follow in the tests – just drive behind the opponent to see how it feels.” – he concluded.
