Formula 1 has announced that the number of Sprints will remain unchanged next season. Five of these are outside Europe and confirmed from 2024, with the classic Spa-Francorchamps returning to host one after 2023.
Liberty Media has confirmed the Grands Prix of the 2025 season that will use the ‘Sprint’ format. These are China, Miami, Belgium, Austin, Brazil, and Qatar. Compared to the circuits hosting the double race this year, there is only one change, with Spielberg exiting and Spa-Francorchamps, which already hosted a sprint weekend in 2023, coming in.
The total number of Sprint weekends remains unchanged at six, dispelling rumors that there would be an increase in weekends at the expense of those with the traditional format.
In an official note, Liberty Media emphasized how “the F1 Sprint format has confirmed excellent feedback across all traditional, digital, and social platforms, in addition to providing extra and exciting content that promoters can offer to fans, increasing attendance on Fridays.”
The confirmation of the six stages reaffirms that the initial plan (which envisaged a progressive increase in weekends with the double race) has been temporarily suspended. The extra budget requested from circuits to host a sprint weekend does not seem to have convinced all promoters in terms of cost-benefit ratio.
There are no indications of changes to the Sprint weekend format. During the F1 Commission meetings held since the beginning of the year, suggestions were put forward to improve certain aspects, but potential changes are currently under discussion. However, it is not excluded that they may be approved in the coming months.
