On Friday in Barcelona, a team radio message from Lewis Hamilton to the Ferrari wall sounded somewhat out of place and inevitably caused concern among the Scuderia’s supporters in view of the Spanish GP. In fact, during FP2, the Briton complained about the performance of his SF-25 up to that point.
In the first free practice session, the seven-time world champion had set the third fastest time with his Ferrari, although he did not seem particularly comfortable during a short race-pace simulation. But the problems began in the afternoon’s FP2 session in Barcelona.
Lewis Hamilton and that team radio which worries Ferrari
After several attempts to put together a qualifying-style lap, Lewis Hamilton came over the radio in clearly frustrated tones. To his race engineer Riccardo Adami, he said bluntly, “This car is undriveable.”
Of course, this can’t be taken as a definitive judgment, but Lewis Hamilton’s frustration on the radio was certainly something that caught the attention of all the fans. Ferrari is still working on setup trials, and the team is continuing its efforts to best fine-tune the SF-25 ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying session, where they hope to be competitive.
The Barcelona weekend is one full of changes. Starting from this weekend, the new technical directive regarding front wing flex enters into effect. Ferrari, like all other teams, has been working to reduce flap flexing, which the federation disapproved of and is now trying to limit. The Spanish weekend is still wide open, and Lewis Hamilton needs to find the right balance with his car if he wants to stay in the fight with his direct rivals.
