Lewis Hamilton’s first Formula 1 victory with Ferrari was already destined to be remembered as one of the defining moments of the 2026 season. However, the celebrations after the Spanish Grand Prix became even more meaningful thanks to a historic podium shared with fellow British drivers George Russell and Lando Norris.
Hamilton crossed the finish line in Barcelona to secure Ferrari’s first victory of the campaign, leading home George Russell’s Mercedes and Lando Norris’ McLaren. The result not only marked a milestone in Hamilton’s Ferrari journey but also produced a rare all-British top three, something Formula 1 had not witnessed since 1968.
For Lando Norris, the occasion carried a strong personal significance. Like many drivers of his generation, he grew up watching Lewis Hamilton dominate Formula 1 and become one of the sport’s most successful figures.
“I grew up as a fan of Lewis. To share the podium with him and then with George, to have three Brits up there, the first time since 1968. Pretty special,” said Lando Norris.
The McLaren driver has often spoken about the influence that Lewis Hamilton had on young racers coming through the junior categories. Standing alongside him on the podium as rivals in Formula 1 represented a full-circle moment for a driver who once admired Hamilton from afar.
George Russell echoed those sentiments after the race, highlighting the unique significance of the achievement for British motorsport.
“We both grew up as fans of Lewis. Three Brits, first time in 60 years, it’s a special feeling,” George Russell explained.
The comments underlined the respect Lewis Hamilton continues to command throughout the Formula 1 paddock. Despite now competing against a new generation of drivers, the seven-time world champion remains a benchmark figure for many of the sport’s current stars. The image of the seven-time world champion standing on the top step for Ferrari, flanked by two British drivers who once looked up to him as fans, captured a symbolic passing of the torch while also highlighting the longevity of his remarkable career.
For Ferrari, the victory represented a major breakthrough in its championship campaign. For Lewis Hamilton, it was the culmination of months of hard work adapting to life at Maranello and helping drive the team’s resurgence. For George Russell and Lando Norris, meanwhile, it was an opportunity to share a piece of Formula 1 history alongside the driver who inspired them to pursue careers in the sport.
British motorsport has produced some of the greatest names in Formula 1 history, but moments like the one seen in Barcelona remain exceptionally rare. An all-British podium is an achievement that spans generations, connecting established champions with the sport’s current stars.
As the celebrations continued after the race, there was a clear sense that everyone involved understood the significance of the moment. Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari triumph was the headline story, but the sight of three British drivers sharing the podium added an extra layer of history to an already memorable Spanish Grand Prix.
