The official page of the Australian Grand Prix has announced that Melbourne will host the season opener in the 2025 Formula 1 season, marking the official debut of Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari.
Yesterday, we witnessed a historic day that marked the seven-time world champion’s move to Maranello. Now, everyone is eagerly anticipating seeing Sir Lewis in the red car. While we knew before when this would happen (in 2025), we now also know where. Melbourne has announced that the Australian Grand Prix will be the season-opening race in 2025 and thus the one that will see Hamilton’s official debut with Ferrari.
Melbourne Returns to Kick Off the F1 Season
For the Australian city, this is not an entirely new development. The Melbourne circuit has been on the calendar since 1996 and, until 2020, hosted the opening race of the championship. The only exceptions were in 2006 and 2010 when the Grand Prix was moved to avoid overlapping with the Commonwealth Games. Since 2020, Melbourne has not opened the season, yielding its place to Bahrain, partly due to the pandemic.
However, from 2025, the situation will change. It remains uncertain whether this will be a one-time occurrence or if Melbourne will permanently return as the first race of the championship. The Australian Grand Prix has always held a special role in the F1 calendar. Before Melbourne, the Grand Prix took place in Adelaide, serving as the season-ending event. The title was decided twice on the Australian track, in 1986 and 1994.
In 2025, Melbourne will undoubtedly attract significant attention as it will be the Grand Prix marking Lewis Hamilton’s debut with Ferrari. The race will capture the interest of global media, and many people will want to witness this historic moment, bringing substantial revenue to the organizers.

Before reaching that point, there is still an entire season to experience, with Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren attempting to challenge Red Bull. Clearly, after an announcement like yesterday’s, everything else is taking a back seat. To see Sir Lewis clad in red, fans will have to wait another year, but many are already dreaming of that moment.
