Formula 1 has seen significant expansion in the United States in recent years. However, one driver has publicly expressed his dismay at what is happening in the American state. We are talking about Lewis Hamilton who, despite the FIA’s restrictions on freedom of expression, has voiced his critical opinion on the actions of Donald Trump and his administration.
After four years with Joe Biden leading the United States, the country has chosen what it opted for in 2016. Donald Trump has returned as President of the United States of America. Since regaining power, he has acted decisively in several areas.
What has sparked debate about his leadership so far is the lack of attention to inclusivity, which is precisely what sets Lewis Hamilton apart from all other drivers. The British driver himself believes that the fight against discrimination is the greatest contribution he has made to F1.
Since 2020, in particular, the British driver—the first Black driver to reach F1—has repeatedly emphasized the importance of inclusivity through numerous campaigns, leveraging his popularity. For example, he has called on his fans for support: “We need your voice, for you to step out of your comfort zone and support us by declaring yourself anti-racist. Encourage your family, friends, and colleagues so that we can continue to make a difference.”
Speaking with the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Lewis Hamilton stressed: “There is still work to be done because people’s mindsets do not change overnight, and in some cases, there is a risk of going backward.”
Criticism of Donald Trump
Commenting on Trump’s actions in these first months of government, Lewis Hamilton has not supported the measures taken by the current U.S. political entities. Building on the idea mentioned above, the British driver used politics as an example to explain why inclusivity has yet to reach a satisfactory level.
“We are seeing [that mindsets risk regressing, ed.] with certain current governments. For example, in the U.S., where the concept of inclusivity is being rejected, which is very serious. We must insist on showing children who watch us that Formula 1 is a space for people who are very different from one another.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
