George Russell claims dominant Singapore Grand Prix win as Mercedes shine
George Russell secured the fifth victory of his Formula 1 career at the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix, delivering a masterclass performance that reinforced Mercedes’ strong position in the Constructors’ Championship. Starting from pole position, Russell led every lap and showcased what he described as his most commanding drive in Formula 1 to date.
The British driver’s performance was a highlight of a weekend dominated by Mercedes’ pace and strategy. George Russell’s pole-setting laps in qualifying left little doubt that he would be the man to beat, while Max Verstappen, starting on softer tyres, was never able to mount a serious challenge. Even with a single pit stop and minor frustrations from slower backmarkers, Russell managed to maintain a comfortable gap, demonstrating both composure and racecraft.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff hinted at new contracts for both Russell and rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a sign that the team is keen to secure its key drivers for the 2026 season. George Russell, while remaining non-committal about his contract extension post-race, is expected to have his future confirmed relatively soon.
Celebrating his triumph, the British driver paid homage to his former teammate and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, recalling how he watched Hamilton’s dominant pole-to-win victory in Singapore back in 2018. George Russell described the moment as a dream come true, posting on social media about the significance of finally winning at Marina Bay with Mercedes.
Hamilton, despite enduring another challenging race weekend in 2025, took the time to send a message of congratulations to George Russell, praising both the driver and the team for their efforts. This interaction highlighted the mutual respect between the two British drivers and the inspiration Hamilton has provided throughout Russell’s career.
George Russell managed to finish the Singapore Grand Prix 5.430 seconds ahead of Verstappen, showcasing not only his raw pace but also his ability to manage pressure in one of F1’s most demanding street circuits. He admitted that Max Verstappen’s soft-tyre start had made him slightly nervous, aware that a jump at the start could have complicated his race in a venue where overtaking is notoriously difficult.
The victory was particularly notable considering Ferrari’s struggles, with Charles Leclerc acknowledging that the Scuderia appeared to have the fourth-fastest car on the grid. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, hampered by a brake issue and post-race penalty, finished far behind the leaders, more than 80 seconds off Russell’s pace, emphasizing the gap Mercedes had created.
George Russell’s composed performance and calculated risk management not only secured a significant win but also strengthened his position ahead of contract negotiations with Wolff. His Singapore triumph added another important achievement to his F1 career and further cemented his reputation as a rising force in the sport, capable of dominating under pressure.
With Mercedes demonstrating such consistent speed and strategy in Singapore, George Russell’s victory serves as a reminder of the team’s competitive edge, and fans will be watching closely as the British driver looks to carry this momentum into the next rounds of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
