Hamilton surprises Leclerc: is a new balance emerging after the Baku race? Key reasons explained
Lewis Hamilton surprised Charles Leclerc by finishing ahead at the Baku Grand Prix: was this a simple one-off event or the start of a new balance between the two Ferrari drivers? Here are the possible triggers behind this outcome.
After Baku, at a crucial stage of the season, Ferrari finds itself facing mixed signals. Hamilton seems to be approaching a breakthrough, while Charles Leclerc struggles to shine on a track that typically suits him. Is this just an isolated episode, or will there soon be greater consistency between the two drivers?
A decisive step forward?
At the Baku Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton demonstrated significant progress behind the wheel of the Ferrari. Starting from 12th on the grid, the seven-time world champion climbed several positions in a race where overtaking opportunities were scarce. By the end of the race, Lewis Hamilton had finished ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc, who was at the center of discussions over a missed position swap with the British driver. According to a former F1 driver, this is a clear signal that Lewis Hamilton is on the right track.
“One of Hamilton’s best races of the year”
The Azerbaijan weekend did not deliver the usual adrenaline rush. After a turbulent start and Oscar Piastri’s incident, the race settled into long trains of cars with very few overtakes. In this relatively flat context, the outsiders, including Carlos Sainz and Liam Lawson, stood out. Among the drivers near the top, challenges were evident. Lando Norris could not improve on his seventh-place starting position, while Leclerc gained only one spot from his tenth-place grid position. In contrast, Hamilton built a solid race. Starting 12th, he finished eighth, overtaking the Monegasque and taking advantage of incidents such as Piastri’s retirement and Alonso’s issues. His performance was widely praised.
Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, James Hinchcliffe praised Lewis Hamilton’s race. He highlighted that while eighth and ninth positions might seem negligible for Ferrari, the context was key. “We expected big comebacks from the main championship contenders, but none managed it. Seeing Hamilton start 12th and finish eighth, beating Leclerc, must rank as one of the best drives of the day,” Hinchcliffe said.
“He beat his teammate and had much more confidence in the car. He seemed relaxed and genuinely happy to race compared to recent performances. I really hope the team understood what happened because there were already positive days, but the momentum never lasted the whole weekend. Even after qualifying, he remained optimistic, knew he could gain positions, and did exactly that. I hope he maintains this mindset in the upcoming races, as he is finally finding the right connection with the SF-25.”
