Lewis Hamilton’s first Monza in Ferrari
Starting from tenth on the grid, after the penalty taken at Zandvoort, did not suggest any major result for the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton at Monza. The seven-time world champion, however, managed to recover a few positions almost immediately, climbing to sixth place behind George Russell, even though the strategy of extending the first stint while waiting for a possible Safety Car did not allow the Briton to attack the Mercedes of his former teammate.
Sir Lewis speaks
Although sixth place was not a particularly exciting final result, Hamilton told Sky microphones that he was satisfied with his first Monza as a Ferrari driver: “Yes, I am very happy with the race and very happy with the progress we are making. I think we are coming off a very positive weekend in terms of overall performance.”
“Slowly I am managing to understand a little bit more – he added – this car. I don’t know if I will ever be 100% comfortable, but I believe that next year’s car will allow me to contribute more (to the team’s results), already starting from the beginning of the weekend. In any case, if it hadn’t been for that penalty, I think today I could have done much more. But I am sure we will have the opportunity.”
The 40-year-old then concluded by speaking about the emotions of his first Italian Grand Prix in red: “It was fun. I think the energy from the fans was electrifying. I had already seen it in the past, in previous years, but I had never been the one to receive it. Clearly it is a completely different story driving here for Ferrari, being here and being able to experience it firsthand is something that I will keep in my heart forever.” “For this I am really very very grateful for all the people who came and for all the energy that kept pushing us throughout the weekend,” concluded Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton.
